Spring Break and Bed Bugs

Spring break is starting for many students across the country. It's a popular time to go on vacation and take a break from the stress of schoolwork. Unfortunately, bed bugs never take a break. In fact, spring break is a blessing for bed bugs, as it gives them the perfect opportunity to find a new home.

Why is spring break such a good opportunity for bed bugs?

Bed bugs spread primarily by hitchhiking from household to household. This is mainly done by traveling from both parties. When you travel, you give bed bugs a chance to sneak into your clothing or belongings and spread to your unsuspecting neighbors. Because of this, it is important to learn how to protect yourself from getting bed bugs.

What can I do to protect myself from bed bugs?

There are many things that you can do to reduce your chances of bringing home bed bugs from a long trip. On one hand you can purchase helpful products, such as:

? Seat Defenders -- Seat defenders provide a barrier between you and the bugs. A seat defender can be used to cover an airplane or taxi seat. It provides coverage and protection from bed bugs and prevents them from crawling onto your clothes or belongings. ? Suitcase Encasements -- Similar to the seat defenders, a suitcase encasement protects your luggage from having bed bugs crawl into it. ? Bed Bug Luggage Spray -- Luggage spray can be used to deter bed bugs from crawling into your suitcase as well as kill any bed bugs hiding in your suitcase. ? Bed Bug Survival Guide -- The Bed Bug Survival Guide provides tons of helpful tips that can aid you in future encounters with bed bugs.

During your trip, it is important to inspect the hotel room you'll be staying in. Check the bed for signs of bed bugs such as blood stains or black fecal specks on the mattress/sheet covers. It's important to understand that even if you booked the fanciest hotel in the city, that doesn't mean you can't get bed bugs.

Lastly, when you get home make sure you DON'T just dump all your belongings on the bed and call it a day. It's extremely important to put all your belongings in the washer & dryer in order to kill any bed bugs that may have gotten into your clothes. Bed bugs can't survive in temperatures of over 120 degrees so the combination of washer and dryer is highly effective in killing bed bugs.

Even though this may seem like a lot of effort it can mean the difference between an enjoyable vacation and a bed-bug-infested nightmare. Jeff Eisenberg, CEO and President of Pest Away Exterminating, stresses education above all else when it comes to dealing with bed bugs. The more you know about bed bugs, the more you can do to protect yourself from them. For more information visit www.pestawayinc.com.
