Suicide bomber kills 8, wounds 100 in Nigerian church

KADUNA, Nigeria (Reuters) - A suicide bomber drove a jeep full of explosives into a Catholic church during morning mass in northern Nigeria on Sunday, killing at least eight people, wounding more than 100 and triggering reprisal attacks that killed at least two more.

There was no claim of responsibility but Islamist sect Boko Haram has bombed several churches in the past in its fight to create an Islamic state in Nigeria where the 160 million population is evenly split between Christians and Muslims.

The bomber drove the car into the wall of the packed St Rita's church in the Malali area of Kaduna, a volatile ethnically and religiously mixed city, witnesses said.

A wall of the church was blasted open and scorched black, with debris lying around.

"The heavy explosion also damaged so many buildings around the area," said survivor Linus Lighthouse.

A spokesman for the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) Yushua Shuaib said eight people had been confirmed killed and more than 100 wounded.

Church attacks often target Nigeria's middle belt, where its largely Christian south and mostly Muslim north meet and where sectarian tensions run high. Kaduna's mixed population lies along that faultline.

REPRISALS

Shortly after the blast, angry Christian youths took to the streets armed with sticks and knives. A Reuters reporter saw two bodies at the roadside lying in pools of blood.

"We killed them and we'll do more," shouted a youth, with blood on his shirt, before police chased him and others away. Police set up roadblocks and patrols across the town in an effort to prevent the violence spreading.

Police spokesman Aminu Lawal said later the situation was calm. "All the areas prone to reprisal attacks are under control and getting back to normal," he said by telephone.

At least 2,800 people have died in fighting since Boko Haram's insurrection began in 2009, according to Human Rights Watch. Most were Muslims in the northeast of the country, where the sect usually attacks politicians and security forces.

Another witness to the bombing, Daniel Kazah, a member of the Catholic cadets at the church, said he had seen three bodies on the bloodied church floor in the aftermath.

In previous such attacks, bombers have usually failed to enter church buildings and detonated their explosives at entrances or in car parks.

A spokesman for St Gerard's Catholic hospital, Sunday John, said the hospital was treating 14 wounded. Another hospital, Garkura, had at least 84 victims, a NEMA official said.

Many residents of Kaduna rushed indoors, fearing a resurgence of the sectarian killing that has periodically blighted the city.

A bomb attack in a church in Kaduna state in June triggered a week of tit-for-tat violence that killed at least 90 people.

Tensions mount as police grab protesters in China

NINGBO, China (AP) ? Dozens of riot police officers marched toward crowds of people protesting over a chemical factory in an eastern Chinese city and bundled some demonstrators into government offices Sunday, raising tensions a day after clashes between thousands of residents and police.

Several hundred citizens of Ningbo, which is in Zhejiang province, had gathered outside the offices of the municipal government, shouting for the city's mayor to come out and for the release of people they believed had been detained by police in demonstrations Saturday. The residents were protesting a plan to expand a petrochemical factory because of pollution fears.

"We can only depend on ourselves now, we can't count on the government to think about us," said one protester, a 40-year-old woman surnamed Jing.

Without warning, about 200 officers who had been sitting inside the gate of the city government offices put on their helmets and came out of the compound.

They tore down banners that people had hung up in trees and grabbed at least three protesters, carrying them into the government compound.

The protesters' fairly cheerful mood turned tense and people threw plastic bottles and shouted "Release the people" over and over again.

On Saturday, residents reported that protests involved thousands of people and turned violent after authorities used tear gas and arrested participants. Authorities said "a few" people disrupted public order by staging sit-ins, unfurling banners, distributing fliers and obstructing roads. Authorities said that the proposed project was under evaluation and that the public was being given opportunities to offer its input.

There have been a series of protests in China this year over fears of health risks from industrial projects, as people who have seen their living standards improve become more outspoken against environmentally risky projects in their areas.

A week earlier, hundreds protested for several days in a small town on China's Hainan island over a coal-fired power plant.

Such protests are exactly what the Chinese leadership does not want ahead of next month's once-a-decade transition of power, with stability being paramount.

The crowds outside Ningbo's government offices are a slice of the rising middle class that poses an increasingly boisterous challenge to the incoming leadership: Armed with expensive smartphones, a growing awareness, mobile Internet connectivity and higher expectations than the generations before them, they are an ever-cynical group whose impatience with the government's customary lack of response is palpable in every fist pump and every rendition of the national anthem they shout.

A 30-year-old woman surnamed Wang said officers took her to a police station Saturday and made her sign a guarantee that she would not participate in any more protests, but she came back Sunday anyway.

"They won't even let us sing the national anthem," Wang said. "They kept asking me who the leader of the protests was and I said that this is all voluntary. We have no leader."

Marchers included the elderly and children, as well as some pet poodles. People held up smartphones and tablet computers recording the protest and tried to send information to others through mobile Internet connections.

In a sign that censors were at work, the name "Zhenhai" ? the city district where the factory is located ? was blocked on China's popular microblogging site Sina Weibo and searches for "chemical expansion project" were greeted with the line that "Some search results are not shown according to regulations." Those that were visible included postings from media sites that said authorities were holding meetings to hear public opinion.

Some protesters wore face masks and shouted slogans including "Protect Ningbo" and "Return my health" while pumping their fists in the air. Cars were forced to stop as a long stretch of people marched along roads.

"We have to do this for our future and our family's future," said protester Jing as she pointed to the smoggy air. "The sky was so clear when I was a child. Look at it now."

Another protester, Yu Yibing, said he wanted the factory to be closed, not expanded, and his 7-year-old son to grow up in a clean environment.

"As the common people, we need to live in a green environment. This is a reasonable request," said Yu, 38. "But the government only puts out some statement and refuses to see us and also suppresses us. I don't know how else we can express our views."

The Zhenhai district government, which comes under the Ningbo government, said Ningbo's Communist Party chief, Wang Huizhong, and mayor, Liu Qi, had held discussions with local residents Saturday night.

A statement posted on the district government's website Sunday said that the opinions and advice of the people who attended "are very helpful" to the party committee and municipal government's decision-making and that the expansion project was "at an early stage."

"We will further solicit opinions and respond to people's concerns and actively respond to people's reasonable requests and demands," the statement said.

The Zhenhai government earlier said it would organize public hearings attended by residents and experts to assess the environmental impact of the project.

The official Xinhua News Agency said the planned project is designed to produce 15 million tons of refined oil and 1.2 million tons of ethylene per year and belongs to Sinopec Zhenhai Refining & Chemical Company, which has invested 55.87 billion yuan ($8.9 billion).

Calls to Zhenhai police and the propaganda department of Ningbo police rang unanswered Sunday.

Hurricane Sandy to cost billions. Will the economy stand?

Hurricane Sandy is causing disruptions for companies, travelers and consumers. But for the overall economy, damage from Hurricane Sandy will likely be limited. Economists estimate the damage will cost between $10 billion and $20 billion.?

Hurricane Sandy is causing disruptions for companies, travelers and consumers. But for the overall economy, damage from the storm will likely be limited. And any economic growth lost to the storm in the short run will likely be restored once reconstruction begins, analysts say.

Preliminary estimates are that damage will range between $10 billion and $20 billion. That could top last year's Hurricane Irene, which cost $15.8 billion.

If so, Hurricane Sandy would be among the 10 most costly hurricanes in U.S. history. But it would still be far below the worst ? Hurricane Katrina, which cost $108 billion and caused 1,200 deaths in 2005.

"Assuming the storm simply disrupts things for a few days and it doesn't do significant damage to infrastructure, then I don't think it will have a significant national impact," Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody's Analytics, said Monday.

The economic impact could be more severe if the storm damages a port or a major manufacturing facility such as an oil refinery, Zandi noted.

Here's how the storm has begun to affect key areas of the economy:

? AIR TRAVEL:

Flights in the Northeast are all but stopped for at least two days. Airlines canceled more than 10,000 flights for Monday and Tuesday from Washington to Boston. The disruptions spread across the nation and overseas, stranding passengers from Hong Kong to Europe.

Airline cancellations have already surpassed those from Hurricane Irene last year and are on par with those from the snowstorm that pounded the East Coast early last year. The Airports Council International, a trade group, said that even if the storm damage turns out to be minor, it could be a week before operations are back to normal at major East Coast airports.

Eric Danielson was trying to fly Monday from San Francisco to Norfolk, Va., to start a new job.

"It was supposed to be only a two-hour layover here in Atlanta, Ga., and now it's beginning to be a 28-hour layover until tomorrow, Danielson said.

Wall Street analysts expect carriers like JetBlue, United and Delta to suffer a short-term hit to earnings as they spend money to shuffle crews and planes away from and then back to the East Coast.

? RETAILERS:

The nation's big stores are expected to lose billions, and the losses could extend into the crucial holiday shopping season. Sales at department stores, clothing chains, jewelers and other sellers of non-essential goods are expected to suffer the most.

The industry is entering the holiday season, when many retailers collect up to 40 percent of annual revenue. Retailers, excluding restaurants, could lose at least $25 billion in sales this week, estimates Burt Flickinger III of retail consultancy Strategic Resource Group.

Even home improvement chains and grocers that will benefit from shoppers?stocking?up on emergency supplies before the hurricane and cleaning and repair items afterward could lose sales in the long run if overstretched consumers feel they must scale back.

"If you're spending $400 on a generator, that could hurt discretionary purchases," said Brian Sozzi, chief equities analyst at NBG Productions.

Flickinger now estimates that holiday sales in November and December will rise 2.1 percent over last year instead of the 3.2 percent he had originally predicted.

A better idea of how Hurricane Sandy is affecting the retail business will come Thursday, when some major retailers like Target Corp. and Macy's will report sales figures for October.

The storm is affecting small retailers as well as large ones.

At Angelo's Civita Farnese, a restaurant in Providence, R.I., the lunchtime crowd didn't surface as usual Monday. By 12:30 p.m., barely 10 customers were inside, and owner Bob Antignano had no hope of seeing the 200 to 250 he usually serves for lunch.

"It's a wasted day and it looks like tomorrow probably will be as well," Antignano said.

The loss of two days' revenue will wipe out his profit for the month. He would face losses if the restaurant lost power. He would have to close, and the food in his walk-in refrigerator and freezers could spoil.

? INSURANCE

The cost to insurers is expected to rival the insured damage from Hurricane Irene last year. Damage from Irene cost insurers roughly $5 billion, according to Sterne, Agee & Leach Research. Because the storm is hitting a highly populous region, with "one of the highest concentrations of wealth in the world," the damages are likely to run into the billions, say analysts at Morgan Stanley.

Hurricanes, like other disasters, can cause big losses but also big spikes in economic activity, once homes and buildings are rebuilt or repaired. And Americans may spend more before the storm when they?stock?up on extra food, water and batteries. Spending can also rise afterward as households restock.

The economy expanded at an annual rate of 2 percent in the July-September quarter. Zandi said he isn't changing his forecast for similar growth in the current October-December quarter of 1.9 percent.

Economic activity in October and November might slow if factory output declines and some workers are laid off temporarily and seek unemployment benefits. But the economy could strengthen in December as companies rebound.

CoreLogic, a private data provider, estimates that there are 284,000 homes worth about $88 billion in the hurricane's path.

? AUTOS

The effect on auto sales may be minimal, some analysts say. Many people who planned to buy cars in the last few days of the month, when deals tend to peak, bought cars over the weekend instead, said Jesse Toprak, an analyst with car buying site TrueCar.com.

As a result, TrueCar isn't changing its forecast for October U.S. auto sales. Toprak predicts that more than 1.1 million vehicles will be sold in October, up 11.5 percent from the same month last year.

Forecasting firm LMC Automotive predicts that 1 percent to 3 percent of new-car sales, around 20,000 vehicles, will be lost because of the storm. But LMC analyst Jeff Schuster predicts that those sales will simply shift to November. So the storm might have little or no overall effect on sales.

Toprak also notes that dealers could gain sales once the storm is over if people need to replace damaged vehicles.

? POWER

Energy outages and disruptions in major East Coast cities "may take a toll on (power) demand unlike anything we have seen before," Phil Flynn, a senior market analyst for Price Futures Group, wrote in a report.

Some of the biggest oil refineries in the Northeast were closed, and others were running at reduced capacity. As businesses closed and drivers staying home, demand for gasoline was expected to fall.

Thread: My Prairie Schooner - Family Woodworking

Man! that is great. You spent a heck of a lot of hours on that project. You spent a heck of a lot of talent and skill on that project. I hope it makes a fortune for the charity.

I have to add a story to this. Myrna's mother was a really neat person. If you said, "Go" she could be ready in 10 minutes to go on a two day car trip. Anyway, the true story is that Myrna's mom came west in a prairie schooner. She flew back in a 707. Just think of the changes that this lady lived through. I can remember when she was 86 Myrna said that Ruby (that's mom) could outwork her. She was from darn good stock. I miss her.

Enjoy,

Scientists deepen genetic understanding of MS

Saturday, October 27, 2012

Five scientists, including two from Simon Fraser University, have discovered that 30 per cent of our likelihood of developing Multiple Sclerosis (MS) can be explained by 475,806 genetic variants in our genome. Genome-wide Association Studies (GWAS) commonly screen these variants, looking for genetic links to diseases.

Corey Watson, a recent SFU doctoral graduate in biology, his thesis supervisor SFU biologist Felix Breden and three scientists in the United Kingdom have just had their findings published online in Scientific Reports. It's a sub-publication of the journal Nature.

An inflammatory disease of the central nervous system, MS is the most common neurological disorder among young adults. Canada has one of the highest MS rates in the world.

Watson and his colleagues recently helped quantify MS genetic susceptibility by taking a closer look at GWAS-identified variants in the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) region in 1,854 MS patients. The region has long been associated with MS susceptibility.

The MS patients' variants were compared to those of 5,164 controls, people without MS.

They noted that eight percent of our 30-per-cent genetic susceptibility to MS is linked to small DNA variations on chromosome 6, which have also long been associated with MS susceptibility.

The MHC encodes proteins that facilitate communication between certain cells in the immune system. Outside of the MHC, a good majority of genetic susceptibility can't be nailed down because current studies don't allow for all variants in our genome to be captured.

"Much of the liability is unaccounted for because current research methods don't enable us to fully interrogate our genome in the context of risk for MS or other diseases," says Watson.

The researchers believe that one place to look for additional genetic causes of MS may be in genes that have variants that are rare in the population. "The importance of rare gene variants in MS has been illustrated in two recent studies," notes Watson, now a postdoctoral researcher at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York.

"But these variants, too, are generally poorly represented by genetic markers captured in GWAS, like the one our study was based on."

Simon Fraser University is Canada's top-ranked comprehensive university and one of the top 50 universities in the world under 50 years old. With campuses in Vancouver,

Burnaby and Surrey, B.C., SFU engages actively with the community in its research and teaching, delivers almost 150 programs to more than 30,000 students, and has more than 120,000 alumni in 130 countries.

NYSE to trade electronically Monday, shut floor

(AP) ? The New York Stock Exchange and the NYMEX are shutting their trading floors in New York Monday as Hurricane Sandy bears down on the Big Apple.

But trading will continue electronically on both exchanges.

NYSE Euronext said Sunday it is putting in place its contingency plans beginning Monday and will announce later when the trading floor will reopen.

The New York Mercantile Exchange, a commodity futures exchange, also will be shutting on Monday its trading floor which is located in a mandatory evacuation zone. The CME Group, which owns NYMEX, said all electronic markets will open at their regularly scheduled times.

The moves come as Hurricane Sandy causes the shutdown of transportation systems throughout the region. Governor Andrew Cuomo said New York City's subways and buses will shut down Sunday evening. New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg ordered residents to evacuate some low-lying areas Sunday and said city public schools will close Monday.

Trading can still go on even without people yelling orders to buy and sell across the floor of the exchange because many orders on the NYSE are already handled electronically. On Monday, securities normally handled on the NYSE will shift to the purely electronic NYSE Arca.

The servers that handle all of the exchange's transactions are housed in Mahwah, N.J.

Trading has rarely stopped for weather. A blizzard led to a late start and an early close on Jan. 8, 1996, according to the exchange's parent company, NYSE Euronext. The NYSE shut down on Sept. 27, 1985 for Hurricane Gloria.

Since the Great Depression, the longest suspension in trading at the NYSE occurred after the attacks on the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001, when the exchange closed for four days.

Sandy, a Category 1 hurricane with sustained winds of 75 mph as of Sunday afternoon, was blamed for 65 deaths in the Caribbean before it began churning up the Eastern Seaboard. It was expected to hook left toward the mid-Atlantic coast and come ashore late Monday or early Tuesday, most likely in New Jersey, colliding with a wintry storm moving in from the west and cold air streaming down from the Arctic.

Forecasters said the monster combination could bring close to a foot of rain, a potentially lethal storm surge and punishing winds extending hundreds of miles outward from the storm's center. It could also dump up to 2 feet of snow in Kentucky, North Carolina and West Virginia.

Dispute With Japan Takes Toll on Chinese Workers

GUANGZHOU, China? The worries and challenges of workers in this southern Chinese car-making city illustrate the risks Beijing faces as its dispute with Japan over a group of islands drags on.

The local economy is feeling the effects of a drop in demand for Japanese-brand cars. Work in the factories has slowed and employees are concerned about possible layoffs. Guangzhou is one of the main clusters for China's automotive industry, employing tens of thousands of plant workers.

"Workers don't have overtime so their salary is less and our sales aren't as good as before," said Niu He Guo, 27 years old, ...

North Dakota clay could play role in oilpatch, initial results of study show

ScienceDaily (Oct. 22, 2012) ? Initial results of clay samples from western North Dakota show varying percentages of alumina content, a finding of interest to the North Dakota Geological Survey that commissioned the study. Scientists in a lab at North Dakota State University?s Center for Nanoscale Science and Engineering (CNSE), Fargo, are completing analysis of the clay, often referred to as kaolin, which could eventually play a role in proppants used for hydraulic fracturing in North Dakota oil exploration.

As part of a research agreement with the North Dakota Geological Survey (NDGS) in Bismarck, N.D., the Materials Characterization and Analysis Laboratory at NDSU CNSE is completing initial analysis of more than 200 clay samples from Stark and Dunn counties in North Dakota to determine their composition and suitability for use as a component in hydraulic fracturing. ?The alumina was above 20 percent for 66 percent of the Bear Den claystone samples and 38 percent of the Rhame Bed samples,? said Ed Murphy, North Dakota state geologist. ?Roughly one third of the sites sampled averaged above 20 percent alumina for the entire exposed bed thickness.?

A final report of the study conducted at NDSU CNSE is expected in late 2012 or early 2013. ?We generated an alumina map of western North Dakota that companies can use to guide clay exploration if they determine that the alumina content is sufficiently high for their needs,? explained Murphy. ?We will publish a final report with the clay mineralogy when that information is available.? https://www.dmr.nd.gov/ndgs/Clay map/GI_158.pdf

Murphy said it was extremely useful to have specialized scientific expertise available in North Dakota to conduct the study. ?CNSE utilizes excellent analytical equipment and employs knowledgeable people with valuable experience. We have had a very good working relationship with the NDSU CNSE. We found them to be very dedicated to their work and generating a product that we could have confidence in.?

The clays show early promise for potential use as a key material known as ceramic proppant, used in the fracking process to help keep fractures open, particularly in the Bakken formation in North Dakota. ?It could potentially lead to the establishment of a ceramic proppant manufacturing plant if these claystones are determined to be suitable for this process. The chemistry and bed thickness that we are providing will answer a number of the initial questions from industry,? explained Murphy. ?If companies deem these results to be promising, they could potentially do additional exploration on their own which might ultimately lead to test manufacturing of ceramic proppant using these clays.?

Currently, proppants used in western North Dakota oil development typically come from other states or other countries. Murphy notes that companies will use approximately five million tons of proppants in North Dakota oil development in 2012. In a recent report, the North Dakota Geological Survey estimates about 1.7 billion tons of economically mineable kaolin in western North Dakota.

Researchers at NDSU CNSE use x-ray fluorescence to determine which elements and how much of those elements the samples contain. CNSE scientists also conduct analysis of clay samples using x-ray diffraction to determine the amount of kaolinite, illite, chlorite and other substances in the samples.

?We frequently partner with agencies and industry on projects,? said Philip Boudjouk, vice president for research at NDSU. ?CNSE provides specialized instrumentation and scientific expertise to a variety of research partners across a spectrum of industries.?

Immune cells of the blood might replace dysfunctional brain cells

Monday, October 22, 2012

The immune system is comprised of multiple cell types each capable of specialized functions to protect the body from invading pathogens and promote tissue repair after injury. One cell type, known as monocytes, circulates throughout the organism in the blood and enters tissues to actively phagocytose (eat!) foreign cells and assist in tissue healing. While monocytes can freely enter most bodily tissues, the healthy, normal brain is different as it is sequestered from circulating blood by a tight network of cells known as the blood brain barrier. Thus, the brain must maintain a highly specialized, resident immune cell, known as microglia, to remove harmful invaders and respond to tissue damage.

In certain situations, such as during disease, monocytes can enter the brain and also contribute to tissue repair or disease progression. However, the potential for monocytes to actively replace old or injured microglia is under considerable debate. To address this, Nicholas Varvel, Stefan Grathwohl and colleagues from the German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases (DZNE) T?bingen and the Hertie Institute for Clinical Brain Research in T?bingen used a transgenic mouse model in which almost all brain microglia cells (>95%) can be removed within two weeks. This was done by introducing a so-called suicide gene into microglia cells and administering a pharmaceutical agent that leads to acute death of the cells. Surprisingly, after the ablation of the microglia, the brain was rapidly repopulated by blood-circulating monocytes. The monocytes appeared similar, but not identical to resident microglia. The newly populated monocytes, evenly dispersed throughout the brain, responded to acute neuronal injury and other stimuli ? all activities normally assumed by microglia. Most interestingly, the monocytes were still present in the brain six months - nearly a quarter of the life of a laboratory mouse - after initial colonization.

These studies now published in PNAS provide evidence that blood-circulating monocytes can replace brain resident microglia and take over the essential immune surveillance of the brain. Furthermore, the findings highlight a strong homeostatic mechanism to maintain a resident immune cell within the brain. The observation that the monocytes took up long-term residence in the brain raises the possibility that these cells can be utilized to deliver therapeutic agents into the diseased brain or replace microglia when they become dysfunctional. Can monocytes be exploited to combat the consequences of Alzheimer's disease and other neurodegenerative diseases? The scientists and their colleagues in the research groups headed by Mathias Jucker are now following exactly this research avenue.

Localised sunshade could stop Arctic melting

If we have to hack the planet, we could at least do it with some finesse. Some of the problems with geoengineering could be fixed by targeting specific regions of the planet, rather than cooling everywhere equally.

A rough modelling study offers a crude blueprint for how to save the Arctic ice cap, but raises questions about who decides which areas to save.

Devised to stop climate change if attempts to cut greenhouse gas emissions fail or are insufficient to cool the planet, geoengineering schemes range from sucking carbon dioxide out of the air to "sunshades" that block incoming sunlight.

Sunshades produced by injecting aerosols into the stratosphere have received the most attention as they could be a cheap way to cool the planet. But they are far from perfect.

Models show that no sunshade can restore both temperature and rainfall to their preindustrial levels. What's more, while average global temperatures could be restored, there would be regional differences. As a result, nations would probably disagree over how much geoengineering to do.

In a bid to reduce these trade-offs, Douglas MacMartin of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena and colleagues simulated a more regional approach. They set up a simple climate model in which carbon dioxide levels were doubled, which is expected to happen in the second half of this century.

Next they modelled three different geoengineering scenarios: a uniform global sunshade, one sunshade over each pole, and a whole-planet sunshade that was thickest over the North Pole and gradually thinned as it spread over the equator and southern hemisphere. They also varied the time of year the sunshades were up.

Friendly local geoengineer

The team found that the regional geoengineering approaches gave better results. A uniform global sunshade left some regions sweltering while others were too cold. But with the regional solutions, these disparities were reduced.

To see if it was possible to restore the Arctic sea ice, which is rapidly melting, MacMartin tried switching a sunshade on above the Arctic during summers only. He found this could restore the Arctic sea ice to its preindustrial extent, while also bringing average global temperatures and rainfall close to their original levels.

"People complain about setting a global thermostat," says MacMartin. "That's not the right way to think about it. It's an engineering problem."

Tim Lenton of the University of Exeter, UK, points out that current climate models are nowhere near good enough to make such conclusions. While they do a reasonable job of predicting temperature changes, they give wildly differing predictions for rainfall. As a result, it's not clear what geoengineering needs to achieve in terms of precipitation.

Lenton is particularly sceptical about the claims for restoring Arctic sea ice, as the model MacMartin used distorts the geography of the North Atlantic to simplify its calculations.

Geopolitical nightmare

MacMartin admits that his simulations are "idealised". In the model, he simply turned down the sunlight over different regions of the Earth. In reality, aerosols move around so this level of control may not be possible.

Nevertheless, his results open the possibility of a more sophisticated form of geoengineering. By combining different techniques, it may be possible to tailor the future climates of different continents, although MacMartin cautions that any change in one region will have knock-on effects elsewhere.

This will make it harder for countries to agree what to do. Lenton points out that nations would have to decide between them which aspects of the global climate to preserve. "Is protecting the sea ice more important than protecting the Indian monsoon?" he says. "Who decides? It inevitably turns into a power game."

In an attempt to reduce the inequalities caused by geoengineering, Lenton argues, MacMartin has uncovered even more complicated inequalities that, if anything, make the geopolitical problem worse.

Obama deserves the chance to fulfill his promises - Editorials - The ...

There?s no telling what Barack Obama might have achieved in his first term if he had inherited a nation unencumbered by a global financial crisis and two wars draining the government?s cash reserves.

Elected on hope and great expectations by people disillusioned after eight disastrous years of the Bush administration, Obama faced an insurmountable task: fulfilling voter?s aspirations with the economy crumbling beneath his feet.

Obama?s first term provided a history lesson on the limit of presidential powers. Without a Congress willing to work together for the common good, one man alone cannot dictate prosperity.

That said, Obama did not help himself by focusing on health care during a period of economic chaos. It was a battle better left for a second term.

Despite the disappointments of his first four years, the president managed several remarkable achievements that in another time would have judged his presidency an unequivocal success.

Among them are saving the U.S. auto industry, reforming Wall Street and health care, redirecting foreign policy to fit modern times, pulling U.S. troops out of Iraq and hunting down Osama Bin Laden, and abolishing the ?don?t ask, don?t tell? policy of the military.

Many other presidents have achieved far less, even in two terms.

Although he hasn?t lived up to arguably unrealistic expectations, Obama deserves a second term unfettered by circumstances beyond his control.

Obama is a better choice than Republican Mitt Romney, who would return the U.S. to policies that helped create trouble at home and around the world.

Romney?s saber-rattling over Israel and the Middle East are worrisome, and his promise to pick a fight with China on his first day in office might lead to unfortunate consequences.

On a tour last summer to showcase his foreign policy skills, Romney failed miserably. He offended our British allies over the summer Olympics and went on to make gaffes in every county he visited.

Romney?s apparent willingness to use force, perhaps engaging the U.S. troops in new wars overseas, is disconcerting. Obama has appropriately refused to let Israel cajole us into a war with Iran, but Romney?s team has expressed willingness to join an Israeli strike.

Obama must do more to curtail federal spending. In a second term, the president must generate bipartisan support for a long-term plan that brings down the national debt in predictable measures. The Romney-Ryan plan of assaulting Social Security and Medicare, while giving defense spending a pass, will not help America?s middle class move forward.

Obama is more likely to lead the nation toward a sustainable and futuristic approach to clean energy.

While Obama promotes alternative energy sources, Romney advocates opening up as much of America to drilling as possible. He wants to drill in more offshore locations, and exploit more federal land.

Romney says the government should not pick winners and losers in the energy field ? a critical reference to federal grants to failed solar power projects under Obama ? but he would continue the existing sweetheart deals to oil, gas, coal and nuclear producers. A Romney government would still pick winners, just different ones than Obama.

Obama and the first lady have made education reform a priority, promoting charter schools and placing a national focus on the important role of community and technical colleges.

The Romney-Ryan ticket is full of promise, too, but is woefully short on specifics. To change course so dramatically now presents an unacceptable risk.

The president should be given the opportunity fulfill the greatness anticipated by Americans four years ago. With a recovering economy and the withdrawal from foreign wars within his control, perhaps the expectations his presidency inspired will be within his reach.

MLS roundup: Idle San Jose clinches top mark

Associated Press Sports

updated 1:26 a.m. ET Oct. 21, 2012

HARRISON, N.J. (AP) - The Red Bulls played a 0-0 tie with Sporting Kansas City on Saturday night, clinching a playoff berth for New York and the Supporters' Shield for San Jose as the team with the best record in Major League Soccer.

New York (15-9-9), which has never won an MLS title, clinched a spot in the 10-team playoffs as Columbus lost 3-2 at D.C. United.

San Jose earned home-field advantage throughout the postseason. The Earthquakes also had the best record in 2005, when they were knocked out in the quarterfinals.

Kansas City (17-7-9) extended its unbeaten streak to 11 games.

Before 25,219, a record crowd at 3-season-old Red Bull Arena, New York pressed the defensive-minded visitors.

KC goalkeeper Jimmy Nielsen, who got his 15th shutout, made a diving save on Dax McCarty's 20-yard, left-footed shot in the 23rd minute, and Kenny Cooper sent the rebound over the crossbar.

Nielsen deflected Cooper's rising shot over the bar in the 41st minute. He raised a hand in the 65th to knock down a 12-yard angled shot by Thierry Henry, then had to prevent an own goal when the ball bounced off a defender.

DYNAMO 3, UNION 1

HOUSTON (AP) - Oscar Boniek Garcia and Brad Davis scored in the second half, and the Dynamo clinched a spot in the MLS playoffs.

Houston's victory, coupled with Columbus' 3-2 loss at DC United, means the Dynamo (14-8-11) can finish no worse than fifth in the Eastern Conference and are into the postseason for the sixth time in seven years. Houston extended its home unbeaten streak to 25 games, dating to June 2011.

Philadelphia (10-16-6) had won two in a row.

Garcia put the Dynamo up 2-1 in the 71st minute, taking a pass from Brian Ching, settling it down and blasting one from the top of the arc.

Jack McInerney scored in the 19th minute for the Union.

REVOLUTION 1, FIRE 0

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) - Diego Fagundez scored in the 17th minute to lead New England to the victory and end a 196-minute scoreless streak for the Revolution.

Fagundez took a pass from Kelyn Rowe and scored from 30 yards.

Bobby Shuttleworth, dressed in pink for breast cancer awareness month, needed to make just one save in his second shutout of the season for New England (8-17-8), which already has been eliminated from playoff contention.

Chicago (17-11-5) already had clinched a playoff berth.

D.C. UNITED 3, CREW 2

WASHINGTON (AP) - Lewis Neal scored in stoppage time and D.C. United secured its first playoff berth in five seasons.

Marcelo Saragosa and Nick DeLeon also scored for United (17-10-6). The Washington club ran its unbeaten streak to six games and helped eliminate the Crew (14-12-7) from playoff contention.

The win also pushed United's club home unbeaten streak to 16 (12-0-4). United won the last of its four MLS titles in 2004.

Eddie Gaven and Jairo Arrieta each scored their ninth goals of the season for Columbus.

IMPACT 0, TORONTO FC 0

TORONTO (AP) - Toronto FC's winless streak reached 13 games with the scoreless tie in its home finale.

Toronto's last MLS win was a 2-1 victory over Colorado on July 18. It has earned four of a possible 39 points during its lackluster stretch, going 0-9-4 to drop to 5-20-8 on the season.

Montreal's winless run now stands at five after its third straight draw. It's 0-2-3 since a 3-0 victory over D.C. United on Aug. 25.

The Impact (12-15-6) controlled most of the play but could not convert that edge into goals. Marco Di Vaio had two strong chances in stoppage time but his close-range shot hit a defender before a volley bounced high over the Toronto goal.

RAPIDS 2, CHIVAS USA 0

CARSON, Calif. (AP) - Martin Rivero and Kamani Hill scored first-half goals for Colorado.

Colorado (10-19-4) won for the first time since Sept. 5 and guaranteed that it won't finish last in the Western Conference. Last-place Chivas (7-18-8) is winless in its last 12 games and has been shut out in six of its last seven.

Overwhelmed by robocalls: Colorado and Nevada residents vent

Obama supporter Katie Silva poses in front of Romney?s campaign bus in Reno, Nev. (Katie Silva)Obama supporter Katie Silva poses in front of Mitt Romney?s campaign bus in Reno, Nev. (Katie Silva)

As Election Day approaches, Yahoo News has asked voters in swing states to share what it's like being in the thick of things as President Barack Obama and GOP challenger Mitt Romney smother them with attention. This week, we look at Colorado and Nevada, the only two states west of Iowa where the candidates are campaigning. In their own words and photos, here are some excerpts from voters on the ground in those key states. Live in a swing state and want to share your story? Here's how.

'The best thing about the election is listening to my third-grade son and his friends on their soapboxes.'

They talk as if they know what they're talking about. Apparently my son, responding to a father who takes bites out of his doughnuts and then claims, "That's your tax," is preaching against Barack Obama on the playground. I received an email from a friend and Obama supporter who said her sons are "refusing to vote for Obama" because "someone" at school told them Obama will tax their parents "and then they won't be able to afford to buy you BeyBlades or SkyLanders or Puffles anymore."

Wow. Third-grade politics are tough. It's all about the toys.

My friend knows about the doughnut tax at our house. She easily deduced the culprit.

Another friend on the other end of the political spectrum had the opportunity to shake Mitt Romney's hand. She let our boys shake her hand only a few hours after he had. What excited them most was the fact that right before Romney shook her hand, he shook John Elway's. The third-grader, a huge football fan, went to school the next day and basically boasted that through the transitive property of handshakes he had high-fived the former quarterback.

'In robocall-heavy Colorado, don't call me?maybe'

Obama holds a rally in Denver on Oct. 4, 2012. (Linda Jackson)President Obama holds a rally in Denver on Oct. 4, 2012. (Linda Jackson)

I've never been so popular among the pre-recorded pitchmen. Previously, on average, [my phone rang with] one highly annoying call a day?those that start with that overly cheery "Hello!" But last week my popularity soared. By week's end, I was fielding four or five calls a day

I live in a purple state?one neither red nor blue. We, as Coloradans, are undecided. Or so the news reports tell us. We're a swing state and the Democrats and Republicans couldn't love us more.

You might think a sane person would let the calls go to voicemail. But I can't. I have been laid off three times since 2010 by struggling companies. I'm looking for a job, and I can't miss a call that might be my next big thing. I only wish potential employers were as interested in me as Michelle, Mitt, Newt and Mr. Huckabee are. They've all called. The wonderful place I interviewed with on Tuesday hasn't. Yet.

So, I'm conflicted?which overly sincere recorded voice do I believe? Or do I believe any of them? I know they all want my vote; they've all told me so. Repeatedly. Honestly, if either side could find me a job, I'd be their biggest supporter. I'd make those stupid phone calls myself. Maybe I should call and ask.

?Kim Marie, Colorado Springs, Colo.

'My husband is a Republican and supports the Romney ticket, while I support Obama.'

He's out-of-state for a year and [I had thought of] not sending him the absentee ballot. ... And no, I would not do that. The only relief that I get is either visiting my daughter in California or with my girlfriends, who mostly feel the way that I do. We simply cannot understand how the Republican Party can tell us that they want government out of our lives and yet want the government to control what we, as women, do with our bodies, the most personal of choices to be made.

At a minimum I see a dozen television ads a day?and I usually only watch TV during the news. The phone calls are at least eight per day and range from the taped messages from candidates to surveys to polls and requests from parties for help. Does anyone ever even listen to a taped message from a candidate? Do they not have a life? Can we not go to the bathroom without being interrupted?? The mute button is my friend as is call screening.

I hate to admit it, but I'm looking forward to Nov. 7 when all I have to ignore is the pharmaceutical ads that tell me about the drugs that could potentially kill me.

A Romney supporter in Henderson, Nev. (Thomas Dwyer)A Mitt Romney supporter in Henderson, Nev. (Thomas Dwyer)

'Moving to Reno [from Alaska] in 2009 has placed me directly in the firing line of all those interested in running for president.'

Not only am I bombarded by the numerous television commercials, but I'm living in one of the largest communities in Nevada; it seems the candidates are flying in at least once a week. If it's not the candidate, it's one of their surrogates, such as their running mate or their wife.

Then there are the phone calls. We receive one or two calls a day from both parties. Thank goodness for caller ID. And thank goodness it's coming to an end. It seems like this campaigning has been going on since Barack Obama was sworn in.

Now think about this: If President Obama wins, both parties will start their campaigns to pick their candidate for the 2016 election almost immediately after January. But if Obama loses, then it will just be the Democrats trying to pick a candidate for the next election. At 60-years-old and retired, I don't want to be doubled down on, so I have another reason to vote for Romney.

'I'd like to tell you that I've stopped answering the phone and haven't watched TV for weeks, but I'd be fibbing.'

Alas, I've become a political junkie. Worse yet, I've been identified as an independent voter in a swing state. That means I get bombarded on a daily?no, make that an hourly?basis by both Democratic and Republican campaigns trying to woo me. Unlike some who claim to be an independent just so they can go out in mixed company without fear of offending others, I truly am an independent and undecided on Obama vs. Romney.

On the local level, I've already locked in on several candidates, not necessarily because they are outstanding candidates, but because their opponents are either clueless or are certifiable nut jobs, in my humble opinion.

In some ways, I envy my friends and neighbors who are staunch Democrats or Republicans. For them, life is easy and uncomplicated, even in a swing state. They'll just "vote the ticket" and be done with it.

But me? No, I have to be open-minded. And so, I watch every commercial and read every flier geared toward my swing vote. I even answer most telephone surveys. Then I read the opinion-editorial columns in The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times and several others via the Web. I tune in to Fox News and MSNBC to get more dueling opinions and then finally I go fact-checking on Politifact.com and Factcheck.org to make the most informed decision.

It's mid-October and soon I'll get my life back. But for now, don't call this independent. She's busy.
