Kris Kristofferson: Award for lifetime achievement presented to Willie Nelson

The pair then teamed on hits like 'Crazy' and 'Sunday Mornin' Comin' Down' during an invitation-only gathering at the venue known as a songwriter's showcase.

Willie?Nelson?and Kris Kristofferson don't get together as much as they'd like. When they do, something amazing usually happens.

This time Kristofferson awarded?Nelson?with the first Kris Kristofferson Award, the Nashville Songwriters Association International's new lifetime achievement award. Then the two played together Sunday night at The Bluebird Cafe.

"I really thought I was there giving you an award,"?Nelson?joked with Kristofferson afterward during an interview on?Nelson's?bus. "I had a great speech. Next time."

The pair teamed on hits like "Crazy" and "Sunday Mornin' Comin' Down" as Jamey Johnson looked on from a corner and producer Fred Foster watched from a stage-side table during an invitation-only gathering at the venue known as a songwriter's showcase.

The 76-year-old Kristofferson joked he was embarrassed the NSAI named the award after him. He's a founding member of the songwriter's organization and like the 79-year-old?Nelson?a member of its hall of fame.

"If I had seen what's happening right now before right now I would've thought I was dreaming because when I came to Nashville, Nashville was the most exciting place for a creative artist to be," Kristofferson told the crowd. "And the people I hung around with were serious songwriters who were totally unselfish, and their hero and my hero was a guy that nobody else knew. It was?Willie?Nelson. He's unlike anybody else."

Microsoft's Newest Office Arrives - Business Insider

The Windows 8 version of Office is officially here.

It comes in two flavors: a cloud version that is delivered over the Internet, Office 365, and traditional software that runs on your PC, previously known as Office 15, now called Office 2013.

Both of these come in a few versions too. Office 365 University is for college students, faculty and staff. It will cost $79.99 for a four-year subscription, which Microsoft points out comes to $1.67 per month.

There's also the Office 365 Home Premium version, which is a single subscription meant to cover a family, or up to 5 users.?Microsoft previously announced that it will cost about $100 a year, or $8.33 per month.

The downloadable-software versions also come in different versions: Office Home & Student 2013, Office Home & Business 2013, and Office Professional 2013. Those will cost $139.99, $219.99, and $399.99, respectively.

If you need Office for more than one computer in the house, it's obviously less expensive, at least at first, to buy the cloud version for $99 a year than to buy Office 2013 for multiple computers.

While it's true that you can also get a scaled-down version of Office for free via?Microsoft's SkyDrive, these new versions of Office are set up to work with Windows 8 touch devices.

Google Apps, which competes most directly with Office 365, is free for schools. For?businesses, it costs $50 per user per year.

Microsoft is releasing new business versions of Office 365 for Windows 8 on February 27.?

Report: Pentagon to boost cybersecurity force fivefold

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Pentagon has approved a major expansion of its cybersecurity force to counter a growing threat of hacking and to conduct offensive operations against foreign foes, the Washington Post reported on Sunday, citing U.S. officials.

The officials, who were not named because the plan is not yet public, said the move would increase the cybersecurity force fivefold, from 900 personnel to a total of 4,900 troops and civilians.

It said senior Pentagon officials made the decision late last year amid a string of attacks, including one that wiped out more than 30,000 computers at a Saudi Arabian state oil company.

The increase in personnel was requested by the head of the Defense Department's Cyber Command.

A Pentagon spokesman had no immediate comment, but said he was aware of the report in the Washington Post.

The plan, the paper said, calls for creating three types of force under the Cyber Command.

"National mission forces," would protect computer systems that undergird electrical grids and other kinds of infrastructure. "Combat mission forces," would help commanders abroad execute attacks or other offensive operations, while "cyber protection forces," would focus on protecting the Defense Department's own systems.

Silver News: Will Silver Outperform Gold and Platinum in 2013 ...

Listen to veteran precious metals advisor Tom Cloud as he explains what lies ahead for gold, silver, palladium, and platinum prices. In silver news, Tom explains why he believes silver will outperform the other metals in 2013.

    Gold News: German Repatriation
? Germany allegedly holds 11% of the world?s gold supply. The U.S. is #1 with 26%.
? Germany is now demanding much of its gold held at the Federal Reserve to be returned to Frankfurt.
? The Federal Reserve reacted by saying it would return Germany?s gold within 7 years.
? Why would it take so long to return the gold to Germany unless the Federal Reserve doesn?t have all the gold?
? Netherlands now thinking about asking for its gold back from the Federal Reserve as well.
? What does this mean for gold investors? It?s good for the price of gold ? More pressure on the physical gold market.

    Silver News
? U.S. Mint cut off the sale of Silver Eagle Coins after only 2 1/2 weeks into 2013.
? U.S. Mint will not resume sales until next week; plus, the premium charged by the U.S. Mint on these coins is now higher at $0.50/oz
? Canadian Maple Leaf also has an increased premium at $0.25/oz
? The good deals in silver right now are the Silver Buffalo and the Silver Morgan 1-ounce silver bars.
? Many forecasters believe silver will outperform the other metals in 2013.

    Palladium News
? The price is now in the $720s to $730s. If you were patient throughout the past several months, you are now seeing a nice rise in your palladium holdings.
? With many countries continuing quantitative easing (money printing) in 2013, and with no worldwide recession, I believe palladium should easily reach in the $800s in the next couple of months

    Platinum News
? Platinum ended the year 2012 as the best performing metal, but this year (2013) many forecasters are expecting platinum to be second behind silver

    Markets
? Debt ceiling increase should have a positive impact on the metals markets.
? The U.S. borrows $4.2 billion per day more than it takes in revenue. The deficit is going up continually. All this is great for the price of gold.
? Japan is also moving toward quantitative easing with its new leadership, which is also great for the metals.

Unlocking new phones now banned under DMCA, the EFF weighs in

It was great while it lasted, but the days of users legally unlocking their own phones is over. Back in October of last year, the Library of Congress added an exemption to the DMCA to allow folks to free their new phones for 90 days. That three month window has now closed. Of course, carriers are still free to offer unlocked handsets themselves, and some will also unlock them for you as long as certain conditions are met. "Legacy" or used handsets purchased before today can still be unlocked without any finger-wagging from federal courts.

So, what does this mean exactly? Well, Electronic Frontier Foundation attorney Mitch Stoltz told us, "What's happening is not that the Copyright Office is declaring unlocking to be illegal, but rather that they're taking away a shield that unlockers could use in court if they get sued." This does make lawsuits much more likely according to him, but it's still up to the courts to decide the actual legality of phone unlocking. Indeed, it's a grim day for those who want true freedom over their own devices. Stoltz said to us, "This shows just how absurd the Digital Millennium Copyright Act is: a law that was supposed to stop the breaking of digital locks on copyrighted materials has led to the Librarian of Congress trying to regulate the used cellphone market."

Secret hearings held in killing of intern Chandra Levy

By Elizabeth Chuck, Staff Writer, NBC News

The 2001 slaying of Washington, D.C., intern Chandra Levy is back in court, but behind closed doors: Records show a judge has been holding secret hearings in the case of the man convicted of killing her, according to the Associated Press.

Family photo via AP

Chandra Levy, a 24-year-old grad student from the University of Southern California, went missing in 2001 after completing a federal internship.

Hearings have been held for the past several weeks, with neither prosecutors nor defense lawyers revealing their purpose, according to court records obtained by AP. The next hearing will be on Feb. 7 in D.C. Superior Court; The AP and several other media organizations are petitioning to open the proceedings.

Ingmar Guandique was?convicted of first-degree murder in November 2010, nine years after Levy's disappearance and death, despite no DNA evidence linking him to the crime, and a lack of witnesses.

Levy's father, Robert Levy, told?KGO-TV in San Francisco?that he has not been told what's been happening in the secret court hearings. He said Guandique was a "convicted rapist and an illegal alien."?

But, he added, "if he's innocent of murder, he shouldn't be in jail for it."?

Police had initially questioned then-California Rep. Gary Condit -- who Levy was romantically tied to -- in their search for suspects, before determining he wasn?t involved. The following year, when Levy's remains were found in a Washington national park, authorities charged Guandique, who was already in prison for attacking female joggers in the same park, reported The AP.

Jacquelyn Martin / AP file

Ingmar Guandique, seen in 2009.

Levy's case stole the attention of the national media. Condit was never charged, but his political aspirations were ruined nonetheless.

Prosecutors had requested a life prison sentence for Guandique, an illegal immigrant from El Savador. Instead, he was given a 60-year sentence, which he?is currently serving.

After he was sentenced, Levy's mom, Susan, asked him if he was the one who killed her daughter, and he shook his head.

"Mr. Guandique, you are lower than a cockroach," she?told him at the time, according to The AP.

Evolution inspires more efficient solar cell design: Geometric pattern maximizes time light is trapped in solar cell

Jan. 25, 2013 ? The sun's energy is virtually limitless, but harnessing its electricity with today's single-crystal silicon solar cells is extremely expensive -- 10 times pricier than coal, according to some estimates. Organic solar cells -- polymer solar cells that use organic materials to absorb light and convert it into electricity -- could be a solution, but current designs suffer because polymers have less-than-optimal electrical properties.

Researchers at Northwestern University have now developed a new design for organic solar cells that could lead to more efficient, less expensive solar power. Instead of attempting to increase efficiency by altering the thickness of the solar cell's polymer layer -- a tactic that has preciously garnered mixed results -- the researchers sought to design the geometric pattern of the scattering layer to maximize the amount of time light remained trapped within the cell.

Using a mathematical search algorithm based on natural evolution, the researchers pinpointed a specific geometrical pattern that is optimal for capturing and holding light in thin-cell organic solar cells.

The resulting design exhibited a three-fold increase over the Yablonovitch Limit, a thermodynamic limit developed in the 1980s that statistically describes how long a photon can be trapped in a semiconductor.

In the newly designed organic solar cell, light first enters a 100-nanometer-thick "scattering layer," a geometrically-patterned dielectric layer designed to maximize the amount of light transmitted into the cell. The light is then transmitted to the active layer, where it is converted into electricity.

"We wanted to determine the geometry for the scattering layer that would give us optimal performance," said Cheng Sun, assistant professor of mechanical engineering in Northwestern's McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science and co-author of the paper. "But with so many possibilities, it's difficult to know where to start, so we looked to laws of natural selection to guide us."

The researchers employed a genetic algorithm, a search process that mimics the process of natural evolution, explained Wei Chen, Wilson-Cook Professor in Engineering Design and professor of mechanical engineering at McCormick and co-investigator of the research.

"Due to the highly nonlinear and irregular behavior of the system, you must use an intelligent approach to find the optimal solution," Chen said. "Our approach is based on the biologically evolutionary process of survival of the fittest."

The researchers began with dozens of random design elements, then "mated" and analyzed their offspring to determine their particular light-trapping performance. This process was carried out over more than 20 generations and also accounted for evolutionary principles of crossover and genetic mutation.

The resulting pattern will be fabricated with partners at Argonne National Laboratory.

Also co-authoring the paper were co-lead authors Chen Wang and Shuangcheng Yu, graduate students in McCormick's Department of Mechanical Engineering.

Mrs. Obama has bangs: Let the analyzing begin

NEW YORK (AP) ? Before we start rambling on obsessively about Michelle Obama's bangs, let's be clear: The president started it.

It was he, after all, who called the new hairdo, unveiled just a few days before the historic occasion of his second inauguration, "the most significant event of this weekend."

And he hasn't stopped there. On Tuesday night, he introduced his wife at the White House staff ball: "And the First Lady of the United States ? bangs and all..."

So given the president's evident interest in the subject, perhaps the rest of us shouldn't feel so bad about analyzing ad nauseum the first lady's new look, an activity that has certainly taken over social media for days (and, perhaps, ended discussion of an earlier obsession, Michelle Obama's arms.) Heck, the bangs even have their own (unauthorized) Twitter account, FirstLady'sBangs, which has taken to issuing dispatches like: "Just got a text from Hillary Clinton's side-part" or "BREAKING NEWS: Barack just named me director of Hairline Security."

And how about the headline in New York's Daily News, the day after Obama's private swearing-in? "In With A Bang."

Quips and clever headlines aside, everyone seems to have an opinion about the new style ? not only how it looks, but what it means. And so, just because it's fun, we analyze some of them here:

THE YOUTH FACTOR: It's no secret, say fashion experts, that on the right person, bangs can make you look younger. It's also no secret that Mrs. Obama turned 49 the very day she unveiled the cut last week, in a photo tweeted from her new Twitter account, FLOTUS.

"None of this is accidental," says Linda Wells, Allure magazine's editor-in-chief. "She tried this on her 49th birthday. She wants to spice it up a bit. And it's definitely a more youthful style than what she had before. It just has a flirty, young quality to it."

THE FASHION PLATE: Clearly Mrs. Obama, well known and admired for her fashion sense, is aware that bangs are in these days. Sure, they've been around forever, and your 5-year-old may have them, but recently bangs have become a full-fledged fashion trend, with actress Zooey Deschanel one of the standard-bearers. (Fun fact: Deschanel, 33, and Mrs. Obama happen to share the same birthday ? Jan. 17.)

"Bangs have been really, really big for about a year," says New York hairstylist Robert Stuart, who has a salon on the Upper West Side. He thinks Mrs. Obama has picked the perfect cut for her looks. "It's much softer and younger, and it makes her look more approachable," Stuart says. "It also works well for her sense of fashion. And it brings out her eyes." (There are, he says, people who shouldn't have bangs: those with tiny foreheads or round, short faces.)

THE NAYSAYERS: Just in case one thinks everyone loves the hairdo ? and the reaction does seem extremely positive ? there are naysayers. Count among them Joan Rivers, comedienne and fashion commentator, who tweeted on Inauguration Day: "Today starts President Obama's next four years in the White House. Let's hope the same isn't true about the first lady's new hairdo." Explanation? She didn't provide one, but in her defense, she only had 140 characters.

SHE'S EXPRESSING HER INNER SELF: Here we get a little more philosophical. Some have speculated that, since Mrs. Obama is starting a second term and won't have to endure any more campaigns, she is finally free to express herself exactly as she wants. And as she feels. "Haircuts do express how people are feeling," says Wells. "You get that sense of her feeling liberated ? more comfortable, and less worried about what everyone else is thinking. She's showing her own sense of style and own sense of energy."

Stuart, of the Robert Stuart Salon, agrees. "I think now she's maybe feeling less threatened, and can express herself more. Really she just seems more comfortable."

IT'S SOMETHING TO EVERYONE: If you'd wandered around the National Mall on Inauguration Day, and spoke to women especially, you'd have found a lot of Michelle Obama fans. No surprise there. But many of these women were particularly fond of the bangs, and for various reasons.

Sheila Garrison, an educator from Maryland, called the hairstyle "different," but all the attention paid to it brought home to her and her friend, fellow teacher Patricia Cooper, that Mrs. Obama "represents women in a beautiful way," in Cooper's words. "You look at her and you are proud to be a woman. She commands respect." Garrison, 58, also appreciated how Mrs. Obama, a fellow tall woman, "carries herself really well."

Mattece Mason, 34, of Tulsa, Okla., adores the cut ? when asked about, it she and her family members ? well, the females ? screamed, "Oh my God, we love it!" But the enthusiasm of her daughters was meaningful to Mason for a reason other than fashion. "My daughter Aubrianna, who's 14, said to me today: 'I want bangs now,'" Mason said. "That made me feel great because my girls have such a role model. A first lady they can emulate." (Mason also pointed out that she thought Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton looked great in those eyeglasses she's been sporting lately.)

And Roslyn Snow, of Newport Beach, Calif., had another reason for loving the new Obama look. "I think she looks like Jane Fonda back in the old days," said Snow, 76. "Remember?"

A SIGN OF SOMETHING BIGGER? Many have wondered whether Mrs. Obama has plans to forge a new and expanded role in the second term, taking on different issues. Wells, the fashion editor, gets that feeling, though she makes clear it's all speculation. "You sense it with the strong statement she is making with her appearance," Wells says. "Before, her look was sort of retrograde: the hair, the A-line dresses. The emphasis was on 'lady.' Now, it seems, the emphasis is on 'first lady.'"

Suspects on trial over Guinea attack claim torture

CONAKRY, Guinea (AP) ? Several defendants on trial in Guinea over a brazen attack on the private residence of President Alpha Conde say authorities tortured them to extract confessions.

Conde narrowly survived an assassination attempt on July 19, 2011, after gunmen surrounded his home and pounded his bedroom with rockets. Conde, now 73, was in another room.

The trial began earlier this month. On Tuesday, defense lawyers sought to have military chiefs accused of a role in the torture testify. A day earlier, defendant Baba Alimou Barry said he'd been handcuffed, hung up from a pole and "almost died" while in custody.

Many of the 33 defendants have ties to Guinea's past two military rulers.

In 2010, Conde became the first democratically elected president in Guinea, a former French colony in West Africa.

13 Tips to Freshen Your Brand in 2013 | Business 2 Community

13 Tips to Freshen Your Brand in 2013 image Branding Marketing CROP2 300x172New year or not, the time for kicking up your brand?s image a notch or two is always now. If you?re looking to make some changes, here are 13 ways you can freshen up your brand in 2013:

#1 Go Mobile Now

Too many brands are holding out on mobile technologies to ?fully develop? before they jump on board. In the world of marketing and technology, by the time a strategy is ?fully developed? the cutting edge brands have already shifted gears in the next trending direction. Don?t wait around for mobile to be a clear and obvious path. You don?t have to take my word for it; check out my fellow blogger Patrick?s write up on the future of mobile marketing in 2013.

#2 Cut Your Blanket Social Media Presence

Having an account on every social media platform is not a marketing strategy. Chances are, a return on investment is seen in just one or two platforms. Cut wasted time and money in platforms that aren?t working for you, and dive all in on the ones that do work.

#3 Pay Attention to Big Brands

Our team here at Content Equals Money holds a firm belief that content marketing ROI works on a sliding scale. You can do the same thing that the Fortune 500 companies are doing, but on a smaller level. See this idea unpacked (with plenty of stats to back it up) in our Fortune 500 guide.

#4 Make Your Brand Visible

I?m referring to a very literal form of visibility. Pinterest is exploding. So is Instagram. Brands who start sharing visual content will definitely have the upper hand in marketing by the end of this year.

(In case you have reservations about my first ?going mobile? tip, you should know that Pinterest soaked up nearly 721 million minutes of mobile users? time in 2012 (see Pinterest link above).)

#5 Sign Up With Google+

I know, I know, you?ve been on the fence about this for months. Companies with a physical address (that should account for most of us here) especially need to get Google+ because it allows you to control of a lot of the information your customers will see when they search for your company: location, hours, reviews, etc.

Plus, with a Google+ account, you can start taking advantage of Google?s rel=author tag. Let our friend Jill Whalen explain why this is critical for SERP rankings and your brand?s overall image.

#6 Start Using Agencies

Because we?re a small business, we know how it is. Few companies have someone who can do graphic design, SEO, content creation, marketing, sales, video, social media, and perform the functions that make your business your business. You?ll save time and money in the long run when you let an agency handle the things you?re not skilled in doing.

#7 Explore Augmented Reality

Inc.com predicts augmented reality will be even bigger in 2013, citing examples of BMW?s online test-drive and Lands? End?s virtual dressing room. This kind of technology, which is dropping in price, is a great business branding technique to help your company stand out.

#8 Keep Telling Stories

Your brand is your story. Whether you choose to work through a blog, video series, monthly webinar, or some other format is totally up to you. Just make sure that you?re letting people know what you?re up to, how things are developing, etc. This does not mean a barrage of Facebook updates. You can tell a surprisingly compelling story with just a weekly photo essay/blog post.

#9 Create eReader Content

The Kindle, iPad, iPad Mini, the Nexus? these things aren?t going away anytime soon. They provide a great opportunity for you to share long-form content that mobile and social platforms simply won?t allow for. Free guides, ?how-to? style mini-books, and other forms of thought leadership are great ways to get started.

A few weeks ago, the Content Marketing Institute published 100 Social Media and Content Marketing Predictions for 2013.There are lots of interesting predictions in this PDF, but I?d like to highlight an included prediction from our founder, Amie Marse, who predicts more brands will move away from international services (because of Google SEO concerns) and toward boutique writing services for scalability and consistency.

#11 Allow Your Customers To Do the Selling

Okay, not 100% of the selling. But there?s something to this idea. The first prediction of the year from Social Media Examiner is that e-commerce and social media will see a happy marriage in 2013. Cutting edge brands are putting the consumer in the driver?s seat, almost letting the buyer sell to himself by voluntarily consuming your great content.

#12 Jump Into Gamification

2013 will see a big shift toward gamification, from Facebook contests to interactive, customer-rewarding website technologies. Even the Economist agrees. If you haven?t explored this marketing strategy, I would highly recommend giving this Social Media Examiner article a quick read.

Indiana Tax Reporter: Farmers Seek Rescue for Property Tax Increase

From the Indianapolis Business Journal:
Indiana farmers hope to avoid significant property-tax hikes by changing the way the state values their soil.

That could mean a major policy change. In the meantime, state lawmakers have filed bills that would indefinitely delay any soil-related tax increase. A temporary delay already has saved farmers an estimated $57.4 million that would have been payable this year.

The uproar centers on soil-productivity factors that are a key component of tax bills on farmland. New factors, issued last year by the Department of Local Government Finance, would have raised tax collections an average 18.5 percent this year, according to a Legislative Services Agency survey of 69 counties.

?Boy, when that memo came out, people noticed right away,? said Larry DeBoer, professor of agriculture economics and a property-tax expert at Purdue University.

The reaction from the farm lobby was especially sharp because the base tax rate on agricultural land has nearly doubled since 2007, from $880 per acre to $1,630 per acre. That?s because interest rates are low, and commodity prices have been at historic levels.

At the urging of Indiana Farm Bureau, the Legislature in 2012 pushed through a one-year delay. This session, Sen. Jean Leising, R-Oldenburg, and Rep. Don Lehe, R-Brookston, have filed companion bills that would make the delay indefinite.

The Department of Local Government Finance would have to get legislative approval before using a new soil factor.

Obama, Karzai announce US military shift to support role in Afghanistan, ahead of schedule

Report By: Nina Rai

Washington, Jan. 12, 2013

The US President Barack Obama and his Afghan counterpart Hamid Karzai announced that American military mission in Afghanistan will shift this spring, from a combat to a support role. In effect, US forces will be handing over the baton of security throughout Afghanistan to indigenous troops, a few months earlier than expected.

The agreement on the future role of the US and its 66,000 troops still stationed and serving in Afghanistan was announced in the White House on Friday, after one in the series of bilateral meetings between Obama and Karzai.

The ?spring? rearrangement for the US army came months earlier than expected. Originally, the US military mission?s transition to a support role in training local troops in Afghanistan was expected to take place in summer. "Starting this spring, our troops will have a different mission - training, advising, assisting Afghan forces. It will be a historic moment and another step toward full Afghan sovereignty," Obama informed.

Obama even promised to soon solicit the counsel of his top military advisers on executing troop withdrawals, at the same reaffirming that the US transition out of the Asian country would conclude by the end of 2014, when "this long war will come to a responsible end". He further asserted: "Make no mistake. Our path is clear and we are moving forward."

At the same time, Obama said, he felt assured: "Every day, Afghans are standing up to take control of their security, and as they do our troops will come home." As per the joint US-Afghan announcement by spring, most unilateral US combat operations would come to an end, with forces pulling back their patrols of Afghan villages.

Elated, Hamid Karzai said: "I am very happy to hear from the (US) president, as we also discussed earlier, that in spring this year the Afghan forces will be fully responsible for providing security to the Afghan people." Afghan president also expressed his thanks to the US for the gains made in his country, and vowed to maintain them even after the planned pull-out by the American troops.

However, Karzai made it clear, that he would not be seeking re-election in 2014. Currently there are more than 352,000 Afghans taking military training or on duty in police or army security roles. Obama and Karzai, whose relationship has been strained at times, also discussed the possibility of reconciliation with the Taliban group. Both endorsed talks with Taliban, suggesting the opening of a de-facto Taliban office in Doha, Qatar to aid the ongoing talks.

Obama also stressed on the need for support from neighboring Pakistan, as its role is vital for war or peace. According to him, any reconciliation requires constructive support from across the region, including Pakistan. Obama went on to say that ?a stable and secure Afghanistan is in the interest not only of the Afghan people and the United States, but of the entire region." The two presidents also discussed the possible roles for US troops in Afghanistan beyond 2014, the timeline set for only a residual US force to remain.

President Obama did not specify exactly how many troops would remain or be withdrawn, leaving it vague. It was only earlier this week that the White House left open the possibility of withdrawal of all US forces from Afghanistan in 2014, after more than a decade of war. It is also the year when President Karzai will be stepping down from office, with elections to be held for his successor. So for Afghanistan it will, in effect, be a military, political and economic transition.

Opinion

The basic purpose behind the American mission in Afghanistan has been to prevent it from becoming a safe haven for foreign terrorists and militants. It was in early 2010 that the actual counter-insurgency efforts by US and NATO military forces in Afghanistan began and since then significant progress has been made in that direction.

The increase in number of troops to 33,000 troops helped to impede the Taliban's rise. They were forced to run away from their safe havens in the strategic provinces of Kandahar and Helmand. During this period the Afghan security forces received all help, training and equipment. They were basically strengthened by the allied forces.

A hasty withdrawal now by the US would undermine all gains made so far and also undo the achievements of the past decade. Moreover, if the US were to leave the place prematurely there is every chance of Afghanistan reverting to its old state and once again becoming a safe haven for the militants groups.

It is therefore imperative for the US and Afghan governments to strengthen their relationship, restoring their trust and confidence in each other and continue doing so. What President Obama and President Karzai have done now through the meetings is a step in the right direction.

But at this juncture it is important for President Obama not to place much faith on the Taliban nor have any negotiations with them. They are basically militants who thrive on violence and bloodshed. Nothing much can be achieved by talking to them, as their agenda is beyond doing any good for Afghanistan.

Till date, the Taliban has neither shown any readiness to renounce violence or terror; or for that matter take part in any sensible political process or discourse. If the US exits from Afghanistan without setting things in order there, it would only help the Taliban to regain their influence and carry out their bizarre diktats.

Another scary scenario, in the event of US leaving prematurely, is that it would create an environment whereby al-Qaida will regroup and revive in the region. Scarier is both Taliban and al-Qaida getting together in the safe havens in the rocky Afghanistan terrain. The combination of the two groups would be both lethal and dangerous.

Such a scenario poses unimaginable risks to US national security, as there is every possibility of them plotting terror attacks on US soil or against any of its allies. The US must therefore strengthen its partnership with the Afghan authorities, take them on-board as an ally and demonstrate unity of purpose with them.

Most importantly, the US needs to focus on having a strategic long-term partnership agreement with Kabul. The current understanding between Obama and Karzai to maintain a residual military force for training and counter-terrorism purposes is an excellent one and must be carried forward post-2014. It will go a long way in ensuring peace and stability in the region.

(AP) ? The Baltimore Ravens want one long final ride for Ray Lewis. Having disposed of Andrew Luck and the Colts, they now face a more imposing challenge.

Next up, Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos.

Anquan Boldin set a franchise record with 145 yards receiving, including the clinching touchdown in the Ravens' 24-9 victory Sunday over Indianapolis in an AFC wild-card game. The win delays star linebacker Lewis' retirement for at least another week as Baltimore (11-6) heads to top-seeded Denver (13-3) next Saturday.

The Broncos beat the Ravens 34-17 three weeks ago.

"I wanted Denver," Boldin said, "because they beat us.

"We'll make it different."

And he wanted the Broncos because it prolongs the Ravens' pursuit of their first NFL title since the 2000 season, when Lewis won the first of two Defensive Player of the Year awards.

"I came to Baltimore to win a championship," Boldin added. "We all did."

Lewis, who made 13 tackles Sunday, ended his last home game in Baltimore at fullback, of all things, for the final kneel-down. He then went into a short version of his trademark dance before being mobbed by teammates.

He followed with a victory lap, his right arm, covered by a brace, held high in salute to the fans after playing for the first time since tearing his right triceps on Oct. 14 against Dallas.

"My only focus was to come in and get my team a win. Nothing else was planned," the 37-year-old Lewis said. "It's one of those things, when you recap it all and try to say what is one of your greatest moments.

"I knew how it started but I never knew how it would end here in Baltimore. To go the way it did today, I wouldn't change nothing."

He would like nothing more than to change past results against Manning, who was 2-0 in the postseason against Baltimore while with the Colts.

"It's on to the next one," the 17-year veteran said. "We saw them earlier in the year and now we get them back again, but with all of our guns back."

The loss ended the Colts' turnaround season in which they went from 2-14 to the playoffs in coach Chuck Pagano's first year in Indianapolis (11-6). Pagano missed 12 weeks while undergoing treatment for leukemia and returned last week.

He was upbeat following the defeat to the team he served as an assistant coach for four years.

"The foundation is set, and we said we were going to build one on rock and not on sand," Pagano said. "You weather storms like this and you learn from times like this."

Offensive coordinator Bruce Arians, who went 9-3 as interim coach, was absent Sunday after being hospitalized with an undisclosed illness. Pagano said Arians "is fine" and would stay overnight for observation before rejoining the Colts on Monday.

Quarterback coach Clyde Christensen called the plays, but Baltimore's suddenly revitalized defense ? inspired by Lewis' pending retirement, no doubt ? never let standout rookie QB Luck get comfortable.

"It's great making the playoffs, but you can't make mistakes and expect to beat a playoff team like we did," said Luck, who was sacked three times, Paul Kruger getting 2? of those. "We'll have to look back at those and hopefully fix them."

Sunday's victory enhanced the Ravens' success rate in opening playoff games. Flacco now has won at least one postseason game in all five of his pro seasons, the only quarterback to do it in the Super Bowl era.

His main target Sunday was Boldin, who had receptions of 50 and 46 yards, plus his 18-yard TD on a floater from Flacco in the corner of the end zone with 9:14 to go.

"I told (Flacco) before the game I was going to get 200 yards," Boldin said with a chuckle.

"It's huge for us. It's huge for this city, they've supported us this entire year and they expect a lot from us. In return, we want to give it to them."

Baltimore overcame the first two lost fumbles of the season by Ray Rice, too, as John Harbaugh became the only head coach in the Super Bowl era with wins in his first five playoff campaigns.

Backup halfback Bernard Pierce rescued Rice with a 43-yard burst that led to Boldin's touchdown, and ran for 103 yards.

Flacco also connected with Dennis Pitta for a 20-yard TD and rookie Justin Tucker made a 23-yard field goal.

Indy's only points came on three field goals by Adam Vinatieri, from 47, 52 and 26 yards. Luck completed 28 of 54 passes for 288 yards. It was the most attempts by a rookie in a playoff game.

Reggie Wayne had 108 yards on eight receptions and moved into second in career playoff catches with 91 ? 60 behind leader Jerry Rice. But the Colts, who moved from Baltimore to Indianapolis in 1984 ? they still are despised here ? became the second NFL team to improve to 11 wins following a two-win season and then lose in the opening round of the playoffs.

The Ravens also beat the 2008 Dolphins in a similar scenario.

Both teams were sloppy early on, with Rice losing a fumble, Lewis dropping a potential interception, and Luck being stripped of the ball on a sack.

But Rice atoned with a 47-yard gain on a screen pass, leading to Vonta Leach's 2-yard touchdown.

That Pro Bowl backfield was bolstered by the kick returns of another Pro Bowl player, Jacoby Jones. He gained 60 yards on kickoff runbacks and 57 on punt returns.

Vinatieri, familiar with big kicks in the playoffs after winning two Super Bowls for New England with field goals, made a 47-yarder in the second quarter, a 52-yarder as the first half expired, and a 26-yarder near the end of the third period. But he also missed a 40-yarder wide right, his first miss against Baltimore after 18 successes.

NOTES: Ravens LB Dannell Ellerbe sprained an ankle late in the game. The Ravens didn't specify which ankle. ... Harbaugh is 6-4 in playoff games, as is Flacco. ... Rice finished with 70 yards rushing and Flacco threw for 282. ... Rookie Vick Ballard rushed for 91 yards for Indy. ... Colts T Winston Justice injured his arm.
