Pakistan official: 17 killed in attack on Shiites

QUETTA, Pakistan (AP) ? A government official says a suicide bomber driving a vehicle packed with explosives rammed into a bus carrying Shiite Muslim pilgrims in southwest Pakistan, killing 17 people.

Tufail Ahmed says over 20 people were wounded in the attack Sunday in Baluchistan province's Mastung district. The blast completely destroyed the bus that was hit and damaged a second bus carrying Shiites that was close by.

An eyewitness who was traveling in the second bus told Geo TV that the pilgrims were headed to neighboring Iran, a majority Shiite country that is a popular religious tourism destination. The eyewitness did not provide his name.

Pakistan has experienced a spike in killings over the last year by radical Sunni Muslims targeting Shiites who they consider heretics, especially in Baluchistan.

Online Used Car Auctions Versus Live Used Car Auctions | Internet

As it pertains to purchasing an used car from an used car market, you will see that you?ve numerous different options. Two of your most popular options includ?

Are you enthusiastic about buying a car or truck? Have you ever considered purchasing a car from an auto auction, if you?re? Purchasing an used car through a car auction an car auction, that is also commonly referred to, is a superb method to find a large choice of quality, reliable, yet affordable used cars on the market.

In regards to purchasing an used car from an used car auction, you will discover that you?ve a number of different choices. Two of your most common choices contain attending an used car auction or playing an on line used car auction. If this really is your first time trying to buy an used car from an auto auction, you could be unsure regarding which type of used car auction you must choose. It?s best in the event that you first take the time to familiarize your self with both on the web auto auctions and live auto auctions, when it concerns making a choice.

As you probably already know just, online car or truck auctions are car auctions that take place over the internet. These auctions, themselves, are available in several different forms. For example, it is possible to purchase an used car from an on line auction internet site. In the last several years, the acceptance of on the web market sites has increased. That?s what has led many car owners to record their used cars on the market online. The only disadvantage to doing so is that you actually know nothing about the car owner. It can be difficult, if perhaps not entirely impossible, if they have even the on the market car in their possession to tell. Also, online auction internet sites let car owners from throughout the country sell vehicles online. It can make the distribution expensive, while this does give a greater selection to you of vehicles to select from.

Another kind of online auto auction that you need to be able to find online is auto deals that are controlled by old-fashioned auction houses or organizations. As a result of reputation of the internet, a significant number of auction owners are rethinking the way which they conduct business. Many are now starting to change their live auctions with on line auctions and many are also deciding to accomplish both. When an house or company chooses with an on the web used car auction, they often achieve this right on their very own webpage. What is good about taking part in this type of auction is that you ought to manage to locate a local auction company. This would make the supply of the vehicle in question easier and it could give the opportunity to you to prevent by and examine or inspect the vehicle that you?d want to consider bidding on.

While on the web auto auctions do sound appealing, mostly because of their benefit, there?s nothing can beat attending an actual, live auto market. In reality, it is often suggested that those who desire to get a car from an used car auction attend a live one. Live vehicle auctions are good as you are in a position to choose which auctions you would like to attend. This means that if you are now living in a particular area, like the Chicago area, you may elect to attend a local car auction, as opposed to one that?s located too much away. You also have the option of choosing to attend a totally free used car auction or one which requires the payment of an entrance fee; your choice is yours to create.

Probably, the greatest good thing about buying an used car from a live used car market is the proven fact that you?re able to see the car yourself. Actually, it is possible to often do significantly more than just start to see the car. Several car auction houses or businesses have planned examination periods. These sessions are where you are able to check each car that you could be interested in buying, inside and out.

Of course, your choice as to whether you?d prefer to buy a car from an used car auction or an online used car auction is yours to produce, but you should know that many car owners report achievement when buying from a live car auction. For starters, you may want to check out the live car auctions published by North Shore Auto Auction. Should you maybe not find what you are looking for, you may then continue to examine your other options; choices that may include online car or truck auctions.

France's 75 Percent Tax On The Super Rich Smacked Down By Country's High Court

PARIS -- Embattled French President Francois Hollande suffered a fresh setback Saturday when France's highest court threw out a plan to tax the ultrawealthy at a 75 percent rate, saying it was unfair.

In a stinging rebuke to one of Socialist Hollande's flagship campaign promises, the constitutional council ruled Saturday that the way the highly contentious tax was designed was unconstitutional. It was intended to hit incomes over (EURO)1 million ($1.32 million).

The largely symbolic measure would have only hit a tiny number of taxpayers and brought in an estimated (EURO)100 million to (EURO)300 million - an insignificant amount in the context of France's roughtly (EURO)85 billion deficit.

Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault was quick to respond, saying in a statement following the decision the government would resubmit the measure to take the court's concerns into account. The court's ruling took issue not with the size of the tax, but with the way it discriminated between households depending on how incomes were distributed among its members. A household with two earners each making under (EURO)1 million would be exempt from the tax, while one with one earner making (EURO)1.2 million would have to pay.

The French government approved the tax in its most recent budget, amid criticism by some that it would do little to stem the country's mounting fiscal problems and would drive away the wealthiest citizens. Hollande's popularity, meanwhile, has been tanking as the country's unemployment continued its rise for the 19th straight month.

In recent weeks, Gerard Depardieu ? France's most famous actor ? announced his intention to turn in his French passport and move to a village in a tax-friendly Belgium.

Obama ?optimistic? Senate leaders will reach ?fiscal cliff? deal this weekend

(Reuters/Jonathan Ernst)(Reuters/Jonathan Ernst)

Following talks with congressional leaders that yielded no news of ?a "fiscal cliff" agreement, President Barack Obama on Friday evening pressured lawmakers to reach a deal this weekend as the public's patience wears thin.

"America wonders why it is that in this town for some reason they can't get stuff done in an organized timetable, why everything always has to wait for the last minute," Obama said during a statement delivered in the White House briefing room. "The American people are not going to have any patience for a politically self-inflicted wound to our economy, not right now."

The president confirmed that following his Friday afternoon meeting with congressional leaders, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and?Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell have been tasked to reach an agreement to reduce the deficit and avoid the "fiscal cliff"?automatic spending cuts and tax increases set to go into effect Jan. 1.

But in the absence of a deal, Obama said he will "urge" Reid to "bring to the floor a basic package for an up-or-down vote" that would increase taxes on households earning more than $250,000, extend unemployment insurance and disarm a sequestration?provisions the president has supported.

But Republicans have been rejecting any tax increases, even for the wealthiest earners.

"If members of the House or Senate want to vote 'no,' they can," Obama said of his plan. "But we should let everybody vote. That's the way this is supposed to work."

The president referred to Friday's meeting, which also included House Speaker John Boehner, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, Vice President Joe Biden and Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner, as "good and constructive" and said he remained "modestly optimistic" about Congress' ability to reach a deal.

But he blamed Congress for the 11th-hour holdup.

"The economy is growing, but sustaining that trend is going to require elected officials to do their jobs," Obama said.

No details on the proposals offered Friday were released by the White House or the lawmakers present.

According to a readout from the speaker's office, Boehner began the meeting by reminding those gathered "that the House has already acted to avert the entire fiscal cliff and is awaiting Senate action." Plan options were discussed and the speaker said the House will consider Senate-amended, House-passed legislation.

Following the meeting, McConnell said on the Senate floor that he was "hopeful and optimistic" about a deal.

"We had a good meeting down at the White House. We are engaged in discussions?the majority leader and myself and the White House?in the hopes that we can come forward as early as Sunday and have a recommendation that I can make to my conference and the majority leader can make to his conference," McConnell said. "And so we?ll be working hard to try to see if we can get there in the next 24 hours."

By Us Weekly

It was fun while it lasted.?The Broadway play "Dead Accounts," starring Katie Holmes and Norbert Leo Butz, will close on Jan. 6, 2013 -- seven weeks ahead of schedule.

"I am extremely proud of this production and the cast. Theresa Rebeck and Jack O'Brien have created an inspiring and hilarious new play and we are all sad to see "Dead Accounts" end on Broadway," producer Jeffrey Finn tells Us Weekly in a statement. "I look forward to working with this remarkably talented cast and creative team again very soon."

PHOTOS: How Tom Cruise changed Katie Holmes

Holmes, 34, received warm reviews for her portrayal of an Ohio woman whose secretive brother (Butz) returns home after a long absence. "Dead Accounts" began previews on Nov. 5 and opened Nov. 29 at the Music Box Theatre in New York City. It was originally scheduled to end Feb. 24, 2013.

In the December issue of Vogue, Tom Cruise's ex-wife explained why she thrives doing live theater. "It's exciting because there's no close-up, so a person has to use every inch of themselves," Holmes said. "So you're never done -- and who wants to be done? It's just another opportunity to keep growing."

Thai 'Yellow Shirt' leaders charged for 2008 rally

BANGKOK (AP) ? Protest leaders in Thailand were indicted Thursday for storming the prime minister's office compound and sealing off Parliament during massive anti-government rallies in 2008 at the height of political turmoil, which left the country deeply divided to this day.

Prosecutors filed charges against Sondhi Limthongkul, Chamlong Srimuang and other leaders of the People's Alliance for Democracy, also known as the Yellow Shirts.

They face up to five years in prison for trespassing at Government House during an August 2008 rally, in which protesters stormed the compound and thousands occupied the grounds for weeks. They face an additional seven years in prison for blockading the Parliament in an October 2008 rally that left hundreds injured.

They also led a two-week seizure of Bangkok airports but have not yet been charged for that.

Mostly hailing from the urban elite, the Yellow Shirts' protests grew from their visceral hatred for former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, a telecommunications tycoon, whose democratically elected government was in power from 2001 until it was overthrown in a 2006 military coup. The Yellow Shirts claimed he was corrupt and that his proxies were running the country after he went into exile following the coup.

His sister, Yingluck, is now premier, which critics say has helped accelerate long-stalled legal cases against opponents of Thaksin, who says the corruption charges that he says are trumped up.

After a year of martial law following the 2006 coup, fresh elections were held that were again won by Thaksin's allies, triggering the Yellow Shirt protests, which took a heavy toll on the economy and tourism. The political turmoil continued for months until the pro-Yellow Shirt Democrat Party formed a government in December 2008 without an election. That brought to the streets tens of thousands of Thaksin supporters, mostly rural folk, who called themselves the Red Shirts.

They were evicted from central Bangkok in a military operation in April 2010 that left dozens of people dead.

The deadlock was finally broken when the Democrat Party stepped aside and called elections in July 2011 that Yingluck's party won. Thaksin remains in exile.

Chinese leadership increases Internet censorship to curb ...

Chinese leadership increases Internet censorship to curb dissidenceChina?s?new communist leaders are increasing already tight?controls?on?Internet?use and electronic publishing following a spate of embarrassing online reports about official abuses.

The measures suggest?China?s?new leader, Xi Jinping, and others who took power in November share their predecessors? anxiety about the?Internet?s?potential to spread Opposition to one-party rule and their insistence on?controlling?information despite promises of more economic reforms.

?They are still very paranoid about the potentially destabilising effect of the?Internet,? said Willy Lam, a politics specialist at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. ?They are on the point of losing a monopoly on information, but they still are very eager to?control?the dissemination of views.?

This week,?China?s?legislature took up a measure to require?Internet?users to register their real names, a move that would curtail the Web?s status as a freewheeling forum to complain, often anonymously, about corruption and official abuses. The legislature scheduled a news conference on Friday to discuss the measure, suggesting it was expected to be approved.

That comes amid reports Beijing might be disrupting use of software that allows Web surfers to see sites abroad that are blocked by its extensive?Internet?filters. At the same time, regulators have proposed rules that would bar foreign companies from distributing books, news, music and other material online in?China.

Beijing promotes?Internet?use for business and education but bans material deemed subversive or obscene and blocks access to foreign websites run by human rights and Tibet activists and some news outlets.?Controls were?tightened?after social media played a role in protests that brought down governments in Egypt and Tunisia.

In a reminder of the Web?s role as a political forum, a group of 70 prominent Chinese scholars and lawyers circulated an online petition this week appealing for free speech, independent courts and for the ruling party to encourage private enterprise.

Xi and others on the party?s ruling seven-member Standing Committee have tried to promote an image of themselves as men of the people who care about?China?s?poor majority. They have promised to press ahead with market-oriented reforms and to support entrepreneurs but have given no sign of support for political reform.

Communist leaders who see the?Internet?as a source of economic growth and better-paid jobs were slow to enforce the same level of?control?they impose on movies, books and other media, apparently for fear of hurting fledgling entertainment, shopping and other online businesses.

Until recently, Web surfers could post comments online or on microblog services without leaving their names.

That gave ordinary Chinese a unique opportunity to express themselves to a public audience in a society where newspapers, television and other media are state-controlled. The most popular microblog services say they have more than 300 million users and some users have millions of followers reading their comments.

The?Internet?also has given the public an unusual opportunity to publicise accusations of official misconduct.

A local party official in?China?s?southwest was fired in November after scenes from a videotape of him having sex with a young woman spread quickly on the?Internet. Screenshots were uploaded by a former journalist in Beijing, Zhu Ruifeng, to his Hong Kong website, an online clearing house for corruption allegations.

Some industry analysts suggest allowing Web surfers in a?controlled?setting to vent helps communist leaders stay abreast of public sentiment in their fast-changing society. Still, microblog services and online bulletin boards are required to employ censors to enforce content restrictions. Researchers say they delete millions of postings a day.

The Government says the latest?Internet?regulation before the National People?s Congress is aimed at protecting Web surfers? personal information and cracking down on abuses such as junk e-mail. It would require users to report their real names to?Internet?service and telecom providers.

The main ruling party newspaper, People?s Daily, has called in recent weeks for tighter?Internet?controls, saying rumours spread online have harmed the public. In one case, it said stories about a chemical plant explosion resulted in the deaths of four people in a car accident as they fled the area.

Proposed rules released this month by the General Administration of Press and Publications would bar Chinese-foreign joint ventures from publishing books, music, movies and other material online in?China. Publishers would be required to locate their servers in?China?and have a Chinese citizen as their local legal representative.

That is in line with rules that already bar most foreign access to?China?s?media market, but the decision to group the restrictions together and publicise them might indicate official attitudes are hardening.

That comes after the party was rattled by foreign news reports about official wealth and misconduct.

In June, Bloomberg News reported that Xi?s extended family has amassed assets totaling $376 million, though it said none was traced to Xi. The Government has blocked access to Bloomberg?s website since then.

In October, The New York Times reported that Premier Wen Jiabao?s relatives had amassed $2.7 billion since he rose to national office in 2002. Access to the Times? Chinese-language site has been blocked since then.

Previous efforts to?tighten?controls?have struggled with technical challenges in a country with more than 500 million?Internet?users.

Microblog operators such as Sina Corp. and Tencent Ltd. were ordered in late 2011 to confirm users? names but have yet to finish the daunting task.

Web surfers can circumvent government filters by using virtual private networks ? software that encrypts Web traffic and is used by companies to transfer financial data and other sensitive information. But VPN users say disruptions that began in 2011 are increasing, suggesting Chinese regulators are trying to block encrypted traffic.

Curbs on access to foreign sites have prompted complaints by companies and Chinese scientists and other researchers.

In July, the American Chamber of Commerce in?China?said 74 per cent of companies that responded to a survey said unstable?Internet?access ?impedes their ability to do business.?

Chinese leaders ?realise there are detrimental impacts on business, especially foreign business, but they have counted the cost and think it is still worthwhile,? said Lam. ?There is no compromise about the political imperative of?controlling?the?Internet.?

Italians, backed by the Catholic Church, aim to stop Sunday shopping

A law that deregulates store hours in Italy, allowing businesses to operate on Sundays in order to stimulate economic growth, has fueled opposition since its inception a year ago.

By Giulia Lasagni,?Contributor / December 26, 2012

People stroll in Rome's Via Condotti luxury shopping street, Dec. 17. A controversial new law is being considered in Italy, which could allow businesses to operate on Sundays in an effort to stimulate economic growth.

Italians are fighting a government lift of regulations on business operation hours,?insisting?that the move will eventually hurt the small shops and values that have long been the foundation of the Italian business community.?

The deregulation, put into effect January 2012, removes restrictions on business operating hours, including Sundays and holidays. It is intended to stimulate competition in what has traditionally been a highly regulated market. However, it has been vehemently criticized by many shop owners, and the campaign against it has received a boost from the powerful Catholic Church.?

Campaign organizers argue that working on Sunday has forced?employees to sacrifice "important values" and benefited big companies at the expense of small businesses.

Headed by Confesercenti, a leading retailers? business association, and backed by the powerful Italian Bishops Conference, the campaign began at the end of November. Its organizers are hoping to collect the 50,000 signatures required to submit a bill to Parliament by April. The bill would give regions ? rather than the national Parliament ? the power to regulate Sunday openings. The goal of the bill isn?t to outlaw opening on Sundays but to eliminate ?the excesses? brought by deregulation, say organizers.

If it gets the signatures, the bill would most likely be examined after the February election.

?People say: ?It?s nice to have shops open on Sunday.? But I don?t make extra sales on Sunday,? says Aldina Orlandini, who has run a clothing shop in a busy downtown street in Reggio Emilia, an affluent town near Bologna, since 1978.

Ms. Orlandini says deregulation hasn't hurt her business, since her store can count on a steady pool of customers. Still, she says, the measure is just wrong.

?People have the right to rest one day per week. Am I not a human being? Don?t I have a family?? Orlandini says. ?The law should mandate a day off.?

But for Mauro Bussoni, the vice director of Confesercenti and the coordinator of the ?Free Sunday??campaign, the problem is more systemic.??This measure favors certain retailers,? he says.

Deregulation hasn?t increased sales, and it has only increased costs for small businesses, since putting together shifts during the holidays is easier for big stores, which are more able to pay the extra costs, including overtime,?Mr. Bussoni argues.

Bussoni says he fears that without regulation of the days and hours stores can operate, a competition will emerge in which only the fittest survive at the expense of mom-and-pop operations, which are already being hit hard by the recession. Istat, Italy?s statistics bureau, recently reported that retail sales for October 2012 were 3.8 percent lower than in October 2011. The process, he says, would change the face of Italian cities, threatening the quality of life of people, such as senior citizens, who rely on neighborhood stores.

Beautiful Winter Salads : Bay Area Bites

White-on-White Salad: Endive, Tokyo Turnips, Fennel, & Grapefruit

White-on-White Salad: Endive, Tokyo Turnips, Fennel, & Grapefruit

When was the last time you had a salad? Not a third glass of Straus eggnog, not a fourth frosted-snowman cookie, not a plate of short ribs oozing into polenta, but something crunchy and made of actual vegetables rather than equal parts bacon, croutons, and blue cheese.

Yes, we know: holiday chip-n-dips, Aunt Mavis?s much-loved, once-a-year rum balls and better-than-sex bars, peppermint Jo-Jo?s singing their siren song. Not to mention the greasy, porky, Spanx-busting allure of pigs-in-a-blanket after three hours of an open bar at your boyfriend?s company Christmas party. At this time of year, where can you go, short of a Green Gulch retreat, and not find yourself facedown in fondue?

So, take it from me, you need a salad right about now.

When I worked for a biodynamic farm at the Union Square Greenmarket in New York City a few years ago, we sold bags of greenhouse-grown mache for something like $6 a quarter-pound. And New Yorkers in fur hats and down coats bought the stuff by the pillowcase-sized bagful, because the only other fresh and local options were potatoes and turnips. Long, snowy months would have pass before April, when the first fresh offerings would be pungent, oniony ramps and a handful of foraged fiddleheads.

But here, where it?s cold enough for hot toddies and sweaters but rarely below freezing, the markets are still in full color-jolted swing. At the Berkeley farmers? market last Thursday, there were inky-purple carrots and kale, pink-hearted watermelon radishes, Spanish radishes black as dirt, Tyler Gold pears and Black Twig apples, persimmons, mandarins, and Meyer lemons glowing like Christmas-tree lights, ruby chard, Boston lettuce, fennel, sweet Japanese turnips, butternut squash and more.

Salads in summer require no thought, only a lavish hand with the tomatoes and basil. In winter, salads are best when composed with a little more artistry, as an integral, balancing part of the meal rather than a lettuce-and-croutons afterthought. So, armed with the crunchy bounty of the winter solstice, now?s the time to discover pleasures beyond the hunkered-down hibernation of roasted roots and mashed potatoes.

RECIPE: White-on-White Salad: Endive, Tokyo Turnips, Fennel, & Grapefruit.
As crisp and chic as a freshly pressed white shirt. You can make this salad strictly white-on-white, with thinly slivered endive, fennel, and celery heart scattered with half-moons of sweet Tokyo (also known as Japanese or hakurei) turnip over pale fronds of frisee or escarole, perhaps with segments of white grapefruit or pomelo added for their juicy acidity. Or you can add a zing of color with ruby grapefruit and/or thin slices of magenta-centered watermelon radish, as shown here.

White-on-White Salad: Endive, Tokyo Turnips, Fennel, & Grapefruit

White-on-White Salad: Endive, Tokyo Turnips, Fennel, & Grapefruit

Its cool crunch and mild bitterness makes a perfect foil for richly flavored wintery dishes, like braised duck legs or French lentils braised in red wine. Because watermelon radishes can be tougher than your typical small red-skinned radish, it?s a good idea to shave them as thinly as possible, using a mandoline or the slicing disk of a food processor. Topped with fresh Dungeness crab and an extra squeeze of Meyer lemon, this salad can become a meal in itself.

Prep Time: 20 minutes
Total Time: 20 minutes
Yield: 4 servings

Ingredients:
2 bulbs fennel, halved
2 heads endive, halved
4 Japanese turnips, halved
3-4 stalks of celery from the heart
1 watermelon radish, peeled, or 1 daikon radish, peeled
1 grapefruit or pomelo, peeled and segmented
pale center leaves from 1 head frisee, escarole, or butter (Boston) lettuce
Slivered rind and juice of 1 Meyer lemon
Vinaigrette:
Juice of 1 Meyer lemon
1 tablespoon white wine vinegar or white balsamic vinegar
1 tablespoon finely minced shallot
1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil
Salt and freshly ground pepper to taste

Preparation:
1. Let minced shallot macerate in lemon juice, vinegar, salt, and pepper while you prepare the salad.

2. Cut fennel, endive, and celery into thin slices on the diagonal. Slice turnips into thin half-moons. If you have a mandoline, shave watermelon radish or daikon into very thin slices; otherwise, cut as thinly as you can.

2. Toss sliced vegetables with juice of 1 lemon to prevent browning.

3. Cut grapefruit or pomelo in half through the equator. Using a small sharp knife, cut out wedges of fruit, leaving membranes attached to the rind.

4. Whisk olive oil into shallot-vinegar mixture. Taste for seasoning, adding pepper, more salt, lemon juice, or olive oil as needed.

5. Toss greens, sliced vegetables, and Meyer lemon rind with half the dressing. Taste and add more dressing as needed. Arrange on a platter or individual plates. Top with grapefruit wedges and a sprinkle of sea salt.

RECIPE: Persimmon, Pomegranate, Pecan Salad with Goat Cheese
I?m warning you: don?t think you can make the toasted, sugar-and-cayenne-dusted pecans used to garnish this salad anytime but right before you serve it. Not because they won?t keep?in fact, they?ll be just fine made several days in advance?but they?re so good, so nutty-crunchy hot and sweet, that your guests will sweep through the kitchen like locusts and hoover up every last nut before you?ve even folded a napkin or put out a wine glass.

Persimmon, Pomegranate, Pecan Salad with Goat Cheese

Persimmon, Pomegranate, Pecan Salad with Goat Cheese

This recipe is adapted from a dish I had, and loved, at Bay Wolf in Oakland (still going strong after 37 years), and was delighted to find in the Bay Wolf Restaurant Cookbook. A mainstay on my Thanksgiving table, it?s just as good, and colorfully cheering, throughout the winter. Fuyu persimmons are the round, yellow-orange, flattish ones, which can be eaten while firm.

Prep Time: 20 minutes
Cook Time: 15 minutes
Total Time: 35 minutes
Yield: 4 servings

Ingredients:
Pecans:
1 cup pecan halves
1 1/2 tablespoons sugar
1/4 teaspoon sea salt
cayenne pepper to taste
Dressing:
1 shallot, minced
2 sprigs fresh thyme
2 tablespoons white wine or champagne vinegar
Salt and freshly ground pepper
1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil
Salad:
2 generous handfuls arugula leaves
3 generous handfuls mixed salad greens
3 Fuyu persimmons, sliced in thin wedges
Seeds of 1 pomegranate
4 ounces soft, fresh goat cheese (chevre), crumbled

Preparation:
1. To make pecans: Preheat oven to 325?F. Fill a medium-sized saucepan with water and bring to a boil. When water is boiling, drop in pecans and blanch for 2 minutes. Drain. Toss wet pecans with sugar, salt, and a gentle sprinkle of cayenne. Spread out on a baking sheet and bake, stirring occasionally to keep nuts from clumping, until dry and toasty, 10-15 minutes. Remove pan from the oven and scoop nuts onto a plate to cool.

2. While pecans are baking, strip thyme leaves off the stalk and let shallots and thyme leaves macerate in the vinegar for at least 20 minutes. Whisk in salt, pepper, and olive oil. Taste for seasoning.

3. Just before serving, toss greens and persimmon wedges with half the dressing, adding more as needed. Arrange on individual plates. Top each serving with pomegranate seeds, pecans, and crumbled goat cheese. Sprinkle with a little sea salt and drizzle on a little more dressing if needed.

Total Hooey: The Strangest Non-Stories of 2012

A lot of things happened in 2012, including scientific breakthroughs, a presidential re-election, and a tragic school shooting. But a lot of things didn't happen this past year.

We realize it's a little strange to discuss things that never occurred ? after all, countless things didn't happen in 2012, from an asteroid hitting Earth, to Justin Bieber marrying a supermodel, to Abraham Lincoln climbing out of his grave to praise Steven Spielberg's? "Lincoln" as being more historically accurate than "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter."

But there were a handful of stories that made the news, often with a splash, promising big news, and turned out to be non-stories, non-events. Here are a few.

Eagle Snatches Baby in Canadian Park

It was a bizarre, terrifying sight seen by millions of people: A large bird videotaped in the skies above a Canadian park suddenly swooping down and snatching a baby. The bird drops the child a few seconds later, flying away and leaving shocked bystanders. A day after the video went viral, students at an animation school, Centre NAD, admitted that they had created the hoaxed video. A statement issued by the school credited (or blamed) three of its students and explained, "both the eagle and the kid were created in 3D animation and integrated in to the film afterwards." As interesting ? and scary ? as the event was, it turned out to be a non-story.

Mayan Apocalypse

According to many, Dec. 21, 2012, was to be the end of times. Or the beginning of the best of times, depending on who you talked to. 2012-inspired folks tended to fall into one of two categories: The gloom-and-doomers expected global cataclysm involving death, fire, planetary collapse, pole shifting, and other unspecified natural (or even supernatural) disasters. The second kind were more optimistic, expecting Dec. 21 to usher in a new age of cosmic peace, harmony, and global enlightenment. Scholars patiently explained that despite dramatic claims to the contrary, the Mayans didn't actually hold much significance for the date, and they certainly didn't think the world would end on that date. Their calendar did not, as many assumed, "end" on that day; it was simply the end of one cycle and the beginning of another.

Much of the hype and concern over the date originated not from ancient nor modern Mayas, but instead New Agers. Neither doomsday nor world peace broke out, leaving some people relieved, others confused, and many amused. [Oops! 11 Failed Doomsday Predictions]

Bigfoot Proven Through DNA

This was also to be the year that genetic testing confirmed the existence of Bigfoot. According to a press release issued by a company called DNA Diagnostics detailing research by a Texas veterinarian, "A team of scientists ... confirms the existence of a novel hominin hybrid species, commonly called 'Bigfoot' or 'Sasquatch,' living in North America," the release reads.

Not only that, but Bigfoot is a half-human hybrid that had sex with human women approximately 15,000 years ago ? or so the theory goes. If it all sounds a little dubious, it should: there was no evidence offered at all. The evidence, which has allegedly taken five years to collect and analyze, has yet to be published in any peer-reviewed scientific journal. Until and unless scientists are allowed to examine the evidence, Bigfoot DNA will remain a non-story.

UFOs Invade Denver

In November, an unusual video of mysterious dark objects moving very quickly and erratically over the skies of Denver, Colo., caused a national stir. An anonymous UFO buff showed KDVR Fox News reporter Heidi Hemmat home videos he had taken from an open field during the past summer of "strange objects ... nobody can explain."

The UFOs, it was claimed, seemed to be taking off and flying over the Mile High City at around Noon on many different occasions. The TV report featured an aviation expert named Steve Cowell who stated categorically that in his opinion the objects he saw in the video were not airplanes, helicopters, nor birds. Many people favored the flying saucer theory, though none were able to explain why no one in Denver had noticed the extraterrestrial spacecraft that repeatedly flew over their city at midday. Skeptics noted that the objects caught on film moved a lot like insects flying in the air, and that the cameraman probably simply recorded bugs. With no further evidence of aliens, the buzz about the Denver UFO finally faded away. [UFO Quiz: What's Really Out There]

Denver wasn't the only city to have its skies lit up with alleged UFOs. A single week in December saw strange illuminated objects hovering in the sky above San Francisco and Brooklyn, N.Y. The dancing lights, it seems, were likely the usual UFO fare: some sort of floating object with a light. "It looks to me like it could have been balloons, carrying lights," Bing Quock, assistant director of the Morrison Planetarium at the California Academy of Sciences, told CBS San Francisco, of the San Francisco lights. Another idea: Chinese floating lanterns, which have spurred at least one other, now-debunked, UFO sighting.

A foursome of lights above Lebanon, Mo., in May, shown in a shaky night-vision video, also sparked a UFO report. While the videographer Jim Barnhill was sure the sight was of extraterrestrial origin, it seemed to have all the makings of an Earthly aircraft: blinking strobe lights characteristic of known aircraft; and a flight altitude, pattern and speed characteristic of known aircraft.

It would have been nice if Bigfoot had been proven or aliens had made their presence known (and not nice if an eagle had snatched a baby or the world ended). But there's always next year...

Samsung teases 'whole new Smart Hub' on Flickr feed, CES launch confirmed

Samsung's HDTV-based Smart Hub is set to land a major refresh at CES, according to a trio of images and a product description that appeared on Flickr this evening. Like previous iterations, the software interface will provide access to real-time TV broadcasts, on-demand flicks, apps and photos, according to the site's image captions. The new version will feature a new background design, along with a "simplified" UI. While the on-screen interface appears to be new, the screen shot is presented atop last year's Series 8 model, including an identical stand and a built-in camera up top -- there's no hint at what hardware advances we may see in Vegas early next year. Samsung's CES press conference is on the books for the afternoon of Monday, January 7th, so we have less than two weeks to go before this new UI -- and a whole lot of HDTVs -- becomes official.

Animation Lights is an artistic project and a learning experience ...

Projecting and rethinking through the new technologies.

Animation Lights is an interdisciplinary learning project that involves two schools: ISIA Firenze, Higher Institute for Artistic Industries, a state school at University-level that is included in the Institutes for Higher Artistic Training and International School of Comics in Florence, a school dedicated to the languages of animations and comics.

The project was born with an experiment made during Fiabesque, the City of Fairy Tales, an event dedicated to the fairy world to get involved with theatre, music, festival, animation, during Christmas holiday in Peccioli, a small town in the middle of Tuscany.
The event, born in 2004, is grown through many European contacts, thanks to collaborations and meetings.

The scene lights that characterized the Fiabesque stage, was projecting and rethinking through the new technologies. In particular, the contact with the Glow, light festival?in Eindhoven, Holland, gave new input to the project.
The use of special tools (architectural projectors, gobos, and a huge light plot) and digital technology allow to design wonderful artistic experiences.

Recently, Animation Lights Project was also committed to design lights and videoprojections for the Creactivity event at Museo Piaggio, and at?Renaissance Tuscany Il Ciocco Resort?cooperated to a new production: [Light]ness of a journey - a trip around the world, composed by sounds, lights, dance performances, projections and old movies.

?

Colle di Pan. Miti di effimera luce was a 2011 project that allowed the students of this special course to work closely with artistic professionals in the realization of light installations, where digital images, scene lights, cut-outs and other inventions let in the magic at?La Piazzetta di Pancole agriturism.

The meeting of Max Pinucci, Fiabesque Art Director and Silvano Mezzatesta, teacher from International School of Comics in Florence, has created new ideas and new co-operations. A selected group of students will work to realize ambitious and no conventional projects, where the languages of the animations combined with new technologies and digital tools are the show and the entertainment itself.

Wall Street edges lower in thin trade

On Sunday morning, Wayne LaPierre, CEO of the National Rifle Association, told the world that armed guards stopped school shootings in Israel. Israel begs to differ. "Israel had a whole lot of school shootings until they did one thing," LaPierre said sitting calmly on Meet the Press. "They said, 'We're going to stop it,' and they put armed security in every school, and they have not had a problem since then."

Adele Trademarks Her Name? | Adele | News | MTV UK

11:38, Monday, 24 December 2012

Record-breaking singer Adele has reportedly trademarked her name in order to stop fans being tricked into buying unofficial merchandise.

The Sun newspaper suggests the move will prevent people from misusing her name on items such as perfume and jewellery.

A source told the tabloid: "She doesn't want anyone exploiting her name by using it on products which may trick punters into thinking she's involved with it."

The trademark would mean her identity is protected, and make it easier for the superstar singer to take legal action against anyone using her name to dupe fans.

Adele has enjoyed an incredible year, having been named Billboard's Top Artist Of The Year for the second time, won countless awards, recorded the James Bond Skyfall theme, and welcomed her first child into the world.

Lawmakers see 'fiscal cliff' deal as elusive

(AP) ? With anxiety rising as the country lurches towards a "fiscal cliff," lawmakers are increasingly skeptical about a possible deal and some predict the best possibility would be a small-scale patch because time is running out before the yearend deadline.

Sen. Joe Lieberman predicted Sunday: "We're going to spend New Year's Eve here, I believe."

Even those who see the possibility of a deal don't expect a lot.

Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, R-Texas, said she expects "it is going to be a patch because in four days we can't solve everything."

With the collapse Thursday of House Speaker John Boehner's plan to allow tax rates to rise on million-dollar-plus incomes, Lieberman said: "It's the first time that I feel it's more likely we'll go over the cliff than not," meaning that higher taxes for most Americans and painful federal agency budget cuts would be in line to go ahead.

"If we allow that to happen it will be the most colossal consequential act of congressional irresponsibility in a long time, maybe ever in American history because of the impact it'll have on almost every American," said Lieberman, a Connecticut independent.

Wyoming Sen. Jon Barrasso, a member of the GOP leadership, predicted the new year would come without an agreement, and he faulted the White House.

"I believe the president is eager to go over the cliff for political purposes. He senses a victory at the bottom of the cliff," he said.

Democratic Sen. Kent Conrad of North Dakota, chairman of the Senate Budget Committee, was incredulous at Barrasso's assertion that 'there is only one person that can provide the leadership" on such a matter vital to the nation's interests.

"There are 535 of us that can provide leadership. There are 435 in the House, 100 in the Senate and there is the president, all of us have a responsibility here," he said. "And, you know what is happening? What is happening is the same old tired blame game. He said/she said. I think the American people are tired of it. What they want to hear is 'What is the solution?'"

President Barack Obama and Congress are on a short holiday break. Congress is expected to be back at work Thursday and Obama will be back in the White House after a few days in Hawaii.

"It is time to get back to the table," said Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., "And I hope if anyone sees these representatives from the House in line shopping or getting their Christmas turkey, they wish them a merry Christmas, they're civil, and then say 'go back to the table, not your own table, the table in Washington.'"

Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va., said he expects something will be passed, but nothing that will solve the nation's growing financial problems.

"I think there's unfortunately only going to be a small deal," he said, but added "it's critical we get to the big deal."

Obama already has scaled back his ambitions for a sweeping budget bargain. Before leaving the capital on Friday, he called for a limited measure that extends George W. Bush-era tax cuts for most people and stave off federal spending cuts. The president also urged Congress to extend jobless benefits for the long-term unemployed that would otherwise be cut off for 2 million people at the end of the year.

The failure of Boehner's option in the House has shifted the focus.

"The ball is now clearly with the Senate," said Lieberman.

He said Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada and GOP leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky "have the ability to put this together again and pass something. It won't be a big, grand bargain to take care of the total debt, but they can do some things that will avoid the worst consequences going over the fiscal cliff."

It was only a week ago when news emerged that Obama and Boehner had significantly narrowed their differences. Both were offering a cut in taxes for most Americans, an increase for a relative few and cuts of roughly $1 trillion in spending over a year. Also included was a scaling back of future cost-of-living increases for Social Security recipients ? a concession on the president's part as much as agreeing to higher tax rates was for the speaker.

Lieberman was on CNN's "State of the Union," while Barrasso, Klobuchar and Conrad appeared on "Fox News Sunday." Hutchison and Warner were on CBS' "Face the Nation."
