She recently shared she wanted to work with a whole bevy of artists ranging from <a href="/news/articles/1687055/selena-gomez-fun-taylor-swift-new-album.jhtml">New York rockers Fun. to Nashville princess Taylor Swift</a>, but don't expect her to get another world-famous pop star on the album.</P><P>And, don't even expect her to sing about him, either. "It's not going to be necessarily, 'Here's my tell-all,' " Gomez explained to <a href="http://www.eonline.com/news/selena_gomez_guess_what_shes_doing_again/325968" target="_blank">E! News</a> about the possibility of her getting personal about her relationship with Justin Bieber on the record. "It's going to be more of something that people could say, 'It could be that or it could be this or it could be that.' I want to be able to write about things I've never talked about before and tell a story with this album, because I've never actually had time to go in and do that," she said. "I've never worked on a song for more than two days."</P><P>In an interview with MTV News, Gomez shared that she wanted to get into the studio by year's end and confirmed she hoped to try out a whole new set of sounds on it. "Very different! I want to go for producers that probably wouldn't want me to do their songs," she said. "I just want to knock on their door. I also want to work with Fun. Reid: Court ruling paves path to racial profiling
WASHINGTON (AP) ? Congressional Democrats and Republicans scrambled for election-year gain from the Supreme Court's ruling Monday that threw out key provisions of Arizona's immigration law but upheld one that requires police to check the status of people who might appear to be in the U.S. illegally.
Democrats said the ruling risks encouraging racial profiling, while Republicans said it strengthens the right of states to make and enforce their own immigration policies. In hot pursuit of Hispanic voters this presidential and congressional election year, members of both parties said the elected branches of the federal government need to overcome deep divisions and enact long-term laws affecting the nation's 11 million illegal immigrants.
The court unanimously upheld the "show me your papers" requirement of the state's law. But even there, the justices said the provision could be subject to additional legal challenges, and they blunted somewhat its effectiveness by prohibiting officers from arresting people on immigration charges.
The court struck down three major provisions of the Arizona law, including one requirement for all immigrants to obtain or carry registration papers, another making it a state criminal offense for an illegal immigrant to seek work or hold a job and a third allowing police to arrest suspected illegal immigrants without warrants.
Democrats said the decision shows President Barack Obama was right to challenge the law's constitutionality and praised him for deferring the deportation of some young illegal immigrants. But they also said the decisions could encourage discrimination.
"I am greatly concerned that the provision putting American citizens in danger of being detained by police unless they carry their immigration papers at all times will lead to a system of racial profiling," said Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, a Democrat from swing-state Nevada.
Republicans, meanwhile, chastised Obama for his executive order and said the court appeared to validate some of the controversial law.
"The Arizona law was born out of the state's frustration with the burdens that illegal immigration and continued drug smuggling impose on its schools, hospitals, criminal justice system and fragile desert environment, " Arizona Republican Sens. John McCain and Jon Kyl said in a joint statement.
"And," they added, "an administration that chooses to set enforcement policies based on a political agenda, not the laws as written by Congress."
The chairman of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus left open the prospect of taking Arizona to court again over the remaining "show me your papers" provision.
"When three out of four provisions of a state's law are struck down, it obviously can't be viewed as a victory for the state," said Rep. Charles Gonzales, D-Texas. "We will be watching very closely how Arizona exercises this part of the law."

Thome to the rescue for Phillies vs. Rays

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Jim Thome knows the routine. Hit a game-ending homer, circle the bases, get mobbed by teammates.
It never gets old.
Thome hit a pinch home run leading off the bottom of the ninth inning to lift the Philadelphia Phillies over the Tampa Bay Rays 7-6 on Saturday after Jonathan Papelbon blew his first save in 18 chances this season.
Thome connected off Jake McGee (2-2) for home run No. 609, tying Sammy Sosa for seventh place on baseball's career list. It was the 13th time he did it to end a game.
"You never forget them," Thome said. "These are moments you never know how long you'll have them."
Juan Pierre and Jimmy Rollins also homered for the Phillies, helping manager Charlie Manuel earn his 900th career win.
"To do that for him, it was special for sure," said Thome, who is very close to Manuel.
In the first meeting at Citizens Bank Park between this teams since Philadelphia won the 2008 World Series, the Phillies rallied from a 3-0 deficit against James Shields with homers from their Nos. 1-2 hitters. But Papelbon couldn't hold the lead.
Thome then came through to lead the five-time defending NL East champions out of last place for the first time since May 4. He hit a high drive to left field, jogged around the bases to a rousing ovation and got a cream pie in the face from Shane Victorino afterward on the field.
"That felt great," Thome said. "They put whipped cream instead of shaving cream so that was nice."
Tampa Bay's Jeff Keppinger was 5 for 5 with three RBIs in his first game after he missed 29 because of a broken toe.
Papelbon (2-2) allowed his first earned runs in a save situation this season. He walked Jose Lobaton with two outs to extend the game. Keppinger followed with an RBI single. Then, Brooks Conrad ripped a run-scoring single to right to tie it. Conrad was 3 for 41 before that hit.
"I've got to do a better job," Papelbon said.
Papelbon said he told Thome in the on-deck circle that he would give him $5,000 if he hit a homer. Papelbon said he wrote the check in the clubhouse.
"That was a huge pickup by Jim Thome," Papelbon said. "I couldn't be happier for anybody in the clubhouse."
Shields, who beat the Phillies in Game 2 of the `08 Series for Tampa Bay's only win, allowed five runs and seven hits in five innings. Since starting 5-0, Shields is 2-4 with a 4.69 ERA.
Tampa Bay has lost three straight.
"Tip your hat to Thome. He hit a 96 mph fastball off a left-hander and they beat us," Rays manager Joe Maddon said.
The 41-year-old Thome was 0 for 12 as a pinch-hitter before his at-bat. He batted .333 with four homers and 14 RBIs in nine games as a designated hitter during interleague play earlier this month.
Shields fanned the first two batters in the fourth before getting in trouble. Pinch-hitter Mike Fontenot and Rollins hit consecutive singles. That brought up Pierre, who hadn't gone deep in 366 at-bats, dating to Aug. 16 with the Chicago White Sox. Pierre lined career homer No. 17 over the right-field fence, and strutted down the line with a finger pointed in the air.
Pierre reached on a two-base error, hustling his way to second base in the seventh. Carlos Ruiz looped an RBI single to right off Brandon Gomes to make it 6-3.
The Rays loaded the bases with no outs in the eighth against Antonio Bastardo, but only got one run on an RBI single by Sean Rodriguez.
Kendrick got Philadelphia started in the third with a leadoff walk. Rollins followed with a drive that hooked inside the right-field foul line to cut the deficit to 3-2. The Phillies had runners on first and third with one out, but couldn't push across the tying run. Ty Wigginton struck out and Placido Polanco flied out.
Kendrick allowed three runs and six hits in four innings, striking out six. He is 1-3 with a 7.36 ERA in five starts since shutting out St. Louis on May 26.
Kendrick retired the first four batters before unraveling with one out in the second. He allowed a single to Ben Zobrist and walked Lobaton. Keppinger followed with a two-run double down the left-field line. He advanced to third on a throwing error by second baseman Michael Martinez and scored on Shields' groundout for a 3-0 Rays lead.
Notes: Pierre was 2 for 4 with three RBIs, two runs and two stolen bases. He also made a sliding catch in left field. ... Phillies RHP Mike Stutes will have arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder on Tuesday. Dr. Lewis Yocum will perform the operation. ... Lichen survives in space: Could it colonize planets by hitching rides on asteroids?
ScienceDaily (June 23, 2012) ? You can freeze it, thaw it, vacuum dry it and expose it to radiation, but still life survives. ESA's research on the International Space Station is giving credibility to theories that life came from outer space -- as well as helping to create better sunscreens.
In 2008 scientists sent the suitcase-sized Expose-E experiment package to the Space Station filled with organic compounds and living organisms to test their reaction to outer space.
When astronauts venture on a spacewalk, hours are spent preparing protective suits to survive the hostile conditions. No effort was made to protect the bacteria, seeds, lichen and algae attached to the outside of the Space Station, however.
"We are exploring the limits of life," explains ESA's Ren? Demets.
Our atmosphere does a wonderful job of protecting life on Earth by absorbing harmful UV rays and keeping temperatures relatively stable.
In contrast, the space samples endured the full power of the Sun's rays. The samples were insulated somewhat by the Space Station but still had to cope with temperatures changing from -12?C to +40?C over 200 times as they orbited Earth.
The samples returned to Earth in 2009 and the results have now been published in a special issue of the journal Astrobiology.
Lichen have proven to be tough cookies -- back on Earth, some species continue to grow normally.
Ren? explains, "These organisms go into a dormant state waiting for better conditions to arrive."
The lichen have attracted interest from cosmetic companies. They can survive the full power of the Sun for 18 months, so knowing more could lead to new ingredients for sunscreen.
Living organisms surviving in open space supports the idea of 'panspermia' -- life spreading from one planet to another, or even between solar systems.
It seems possible that organisms could colonize planets by hitching rides on asteroids. ESA is probing this intriguing theory further on future Station missions with different samples.

Darwin?s principles say cancer will always evolve to resist treatment
ScienceDaily (June 21, 2012) ? According to researchers at Moffitt Cancer Center, cancer is subject to the evolutionary processes laid out by Charles Darwin in his concept of natural selection. Natural selection was the process identified by Darwin by which nature selects certain physical attributes, or phenotypes, to pass on to offspring to better "fit" the organism to the environment.
As applied to cancer, natural selection, a key principle of modern biology, suggests that malignancies in distinct "microhabitats" promote the evolution of resistance to therapies. However, these same evolutionary principles of natural selection can be applied to successfully manage cancer, say Moffitt researchers who published an opinion piece in a recent issue of Nature Reviews Cancer.
"Understanding cancer as a disease starts with identifying crucial environmental forces and corresponding adaptive cellular strategies," said Robert A. Gatenby, M.D., chair of the Department of Diagnostic Imaging. "Cancer is driven by environmental selection forces that interact with individual cellular adaptive strategies."
Cancer cell development, like any natural selection (or Darwinian) process, is governed by environmental selection forces and cellular adaptive strategies, the authors wrote. Investigating cancer and its proliferation through genetic changes and ignoring the adaptive landscape is most likely futile. Under "selective pressure" of chemotherapy, in this case the "adaptive landscape," resistant populations of cancer cells invariably evolve.
The authors say that tumors can be thought of as "continents" populated by multiple cellular species that adapt to regional variations in environmental selection forces. Their strategy in offering this metaphor, they wrote, is to "integrate microenvironmental factors at work during cancer's progression" into the model of the evolution of cancer and, particularly, the evolution of drug resistance.
"Hundreds of mutations can be found in tumors," said co-author Daniel Verduzco, Ph.D., a post-doctoral fellow at Moffitt. "The physical environment of the early tumor is constantly changing, often in response to inflammation."
This reality should remind us, they wrote, that natural selection selects for phenotype, for observable physical characteristics, and that natural selection forces at work in local environments causes populations to change phenotypically rather than genotypically.
The authors point out that for most patients with advanced cancers -- even when there is a well-known target and a highly specific drug -- response to therapy is fleeting owing to the evolution and proliferation of a resistant population of cancer cells.
While targeted therapies have been among the most recent approaches to treating cancer, the authors suggest that the vast changes in the genetics of tumors via mutations reduce the effectiveness of targeted therapies and are a reason why targeted therapies cease to work.
"The emergence of resistance is predictable and inevitable as a fundamental property of carcinogenesis," Gatenby said. "However, this fundamental fact is commonly ignored in the design of treatment strategies. The emergence of drug resistance is rarely, if ever, dealt with until it occurs."
In an effort to develop patient-specific, long-term therapeutic strategies, the authors contend that resistance should be anticipated. By "anticipation" in action, they mean developing "adaptive therapies" prior to the emergence of resistance.
Cancer cells, they wrote, can only adapt to immediate selection forces. Cancer cells cannot anticipate future environmental conditions or evolutionary dynamics. This concept, said the authors, may provide an advantage when designing new therapies by "directing" the natural selection processes to prevent the outgrowth of resistant cancer populations and so improve outcomes.
"This potentially unifying theory places the evolution of cancer within a dynamically active landscape," said Robert J. Gillies, chair of the Department of Cancer Imaging and Metabolism, and program leader of Experimental Therapeutics. "The outcome is cancer's heterogeneity -- those variations that negatively affect targeted therapies to control cancer.
"Recognizing that evolutionary dynamics are an essential component of carcinogenesis itself can lead to development of appropriate therapeutic strategies," Gillies said. "For example, knowing ahead of time that resistant cancers are likely to emerge provides us with lead time to develop preventive or adaptive therapeutic approaches. We have recently completed studies with our colleagues, Dr. Ariosto Silva , showing that evolutionarily informed therapies can forestall the emergence of resistant tumors for a very long time."
The authors conclude that we can use our understanding of evolution to strategically direct natural selection toward preventing the outgrowth of resistant cancer populations and, in so doing, improve outcomes.
This research is supported in part by a grant from the McDonnell Foundation (Grant# 220020270) and two grants from the National Cancer Institute, part of the National Institutes of Health (Gant # U54 CA143970 and Grant # R01 CA077575).

I hate the fact that she looks pudgy, that the hairdo is too specific and molded. So, guess I will buy the HS and then break out the tools to give her a new hair. Darn, why can't anything be simple nowadays in this hobby? |

As for face shape and skin tone, that is as much down to photography as it is to sculpting. I thought the War Scarface was pale after seeing Jeff's pics, but, it was fine when I briefly had the figure in hand. CHEERS! |

Re: Hot Toys- Sucker Punch: Amber- pics, full review up later today- Great pics! But I may have to pass... It doesn't look anything like her. She looked too wide-eyed, in my opinion. She's Asian after all. Her irises are too small. If you look at her pics on the web, they are kinda large for her face, making her look a bit cross-eyed up front (that's why she looks great when she looks to her side). Also, her eyebrows are too short; they extend beyond the length of her eyes. They are also too low; there is bit of space (fat) in between the eye and brow for most Chinese/Asian faces. Sorry, I notice these things.... It's a curse, really.

Re: Hot Toys- Sucker Punch: Amber- pics, full review up later today- i know there's bound to be, but there is a pretty noticeable amount of discrepancy between the prototype and the final fig. i guess this becomes REALLY obvious when dealing with female prototype eyes/make-up paint apps vs. factory work paint apps. this is still a great female sculpt though. appreciated to say the least.

Something about the way they painted the eyes doesn't seem right. I still like the figure and have no intention of cancelling my preorder. |
