NCAA underground cable connects to national grid

Ngorongoro Conservation Area

The Ngorongoro Conservation Area becomes the first National Park in the country to be fully connected to the National grid through the just accomplished 3.8 billion/- electric project.

?It was an ambitious undertaking involving over 20 kilometres of underground cabling to form the main power backbone inside the Conservation Area Authority,? said Mr Maurus Ngairo, the chief electrician at the NCAA.

The Electricity expert explained that the wiring had to be done underground so as not to disturb the ecology of the area and preserve the natural environment in the conservation area which is endowed with rich flora and fauna.

?You cannot have electric posts running about the park because for one thing, elephants will either break or uproot them in no time and if live wires lay about the ground they may cause danger to wildlife and humans alike,? said Mr Ngairo.

The underground cables done with aluminum as opposed to the usual copper wiring, has managed to stealthily power up the remote park without disturbing the natural appearance of the NCAA through setting up of unsightly infrastructures.

It may have been an expensive project but according to Ngairo, it is paying dividends. ?Previously we used to rely on KVA 800-1000 generators to power up our premises and that cost 120 million/- per month because the giant power sources consumes 190 liters of diesel per hour,? said the expert.

However using the grid power, the NCAA now spends just 42million/- per month, which means the conservation management is now saving nearly 80 million every month. The power backbone in the park has also allowed connection points for other potential users to connect their premises into the grid and tap power, instead of using their generators whose noisy outputs disturb animals.

So far the NCAA management targets to connect all tourist hotels and lodges operating inside the park, who as far as the expert is concerned, they also stand to save a lot of money from their overhead costs. Soon to be connected with the grid includes the Ngorongoro Rhino Lodge, Sopa Lodge, Wildlife Lodge, ?And-Beyond? and Serena, as well as staff houses for the NCAA and the said hotels.
