His Holiness Kyabje Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche (1910-1991), a renowned scholar, sage, poet and terton (spiritual treasure-discoverer), a Vajrayana master, and teacher, was one of the greatest and most influential spiritual leaders in the 20th century.Dilgo Khyentse (Tibetan: ???????????????????; Wylie: dil mgo mkhyen brtse) Rinpoche (c.1910-28 September 1991) was head of the Nyingma school of Tibetan Buddhism from 1987 to 1991.

He served as the Dzogchen teacher of HH the 14th Dalai Lama.

Khyentse Rinpoche was born in 1910 in the Denkhok Valley, Derg?, eastern Tibet, to a family descended from the royal lineage of the 8th century king Trisang Deutsen. Before his birth he had been recognized as an extraordinary incarnation by Mipham Rinpoche, who later gave him the name Tashi Paljor, Auspicious Glory. At age eleven, upon entering Shechen Monastery in Kham, he was formally recognized and enthroned by Shechen Gyaltsap, his root guru and Mipham Rinpoche?s Dharma heir, as an incarnation of the wisdom mind of the first Khyentse Rinpoche, Jamyang Khyentse Wangpo (1820-1992).

One of the last of the generation of great lamas who completed their education and training in Tibet, Khyentse Rinpoche spent over 20 years in retreat and became a holder of countless transmissions in all the major schools of Tibetan Buddhism, particularly in the Nyingma, the "early transmission" school founded by Padmasambhava in the 8th century. He was the exemplary present day exponent of Tibet?s Rim? or ecumenical movement and was renowned for his ability to transmit the teachings of each lineage according to its own tradition. His Holiness was a scholar, sage, poet, and a tert?n, a discoverer of spiritual treasures hidden at the time of Padmasambhava. He was a master of the pith-instructions of Dzogchen which directly introduce the student to the nature of mind. He was the spiritual advisor of the Royal Family of Bhutan, the main Nyingma teacher of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, and a guiding light to thousands of students around the world.

Khyentse Rinpoche was a most imposing figure ? a "mountain" of a man with inexhaustible energy whose only motivation was to benefit others. In Nepal he built Shechen Tennyi Dargyeling, a magnificent monastery housing a large community of monks who are continuing the tradition as it had been practiced in Tibet. He was a master of every aspect of monastic life, including the many ceremonies and ritual dances, and supervised the education and spiritual training of the monks. He was a married lama who raised a family and counseled an extended lay community on all matters, spiritual and mundane. Until his passing in 1991 he traveled extensively in the East and the West working tirelessly to preserve and transmit the Buddha?s teachings.

His Holiness taught at precisely the level appropriate for each audience. In a spontaneous, effortless manner he drew on an inexhaustible ocean of wisdom which he delivered in an uninterrupted stream of blessings and Dharma teachings. It would seem that he never paused to compose his thoughts or choose his words, yet each phrase would be flawlessly constructed even when expounding the subtlest philosophical point. Such a discourse could be transcribed unedited into a definitive reference text for future generations.

Khyentse Rinpoche was a national treasure, the embodiment of the highest qualities and ideals of the Tibetan culture. To be around him was to be in the heart of Tibet, at the center of a sacred realm where philosophy, art and ritual, as well as the most ordinary activities of daily life, are the expression of primordial awareness, pointing to its own intrinsic purity ? the enlightened mind of all the Buddhas. His Holiness attended to the varied affairs of the many people who visited daily with the same care and concern that a mother has for her only child. Even in the midst of a whirlwind of activity he remained unperturbed, immersed in the vast wisdom mind of Guru Rinpoche, inspiring all who encountered him with his extraordinary presence, simplicity, dignity and humor.

Alphonse Maria Mucha was born in the town of Ivan?ice, Moravia (today?s region of Czech Republic). His singing abilities allowed him to continue his education through high school in the Moravian capital of Brno, even though drawing had been his first love since childhood. He worked at decorative painting jobs in Moravia, mostly painting theatrical scenery, then in 1879 moved to Vienna to work for a leading Viennese theatrical design company, while informally furthering his artistic education. When a fire destroyed his employer?s business in 1881 he returned to Moravia, doing freelance decorative and portrait painting. Count Karl Khuen of Mikulov hired Mucha to decorate Hru?ovany Emmahof Castle with murals, and was impressed enough that he agreed to sponsor Mucha?s formal training at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts.

Planet found at perfect spot for life -?in solar system with three suns

Scientists have found a planet about 4.5 times the mass of Earth that orbits in the heart of its star's habitable zone, with two other suns orbiting much farther away. Is there water or the potential for life? Perhaps. But the planet could also be a two-faced world of scorching sun and perpetual ice. ??

A newfound planet only 22 light-years away represents the best candidate yet for hosting liquid water on its surface, according to a team of astronomers announcing the find Thursday.

The planet has 4.5 times Earth's mass and orbits in the heart of its star's habitable zone ? the region where water could remain stable on an orbiting planet's surface. Liquid water is a necessary ingredient for organic life.

For now, however, too little is known about the planet's composition and the makeup of any atmosphere ? if it has one ? to say with confidence that water is likely to be there, researchers say. Location alone does not make for a habitable planet. Some scientists suggest that the newfound planet could be caught with one hemisphere permanently facing its star, lessening any prospects for life.

Still, the researchers note the planet's position well within the habitable zone is an encouraging first sign.

This is not the first so-called super Earth astronomers have detected in a star's habitable zone. In December, scientists with NASA's Kepler mission announced the discovery of a super Earth orbiting within its host star's habitable zone. That planet was orbiting a sun-like star, marking an important step along the path toward meeting the mission's goal of uncovering Earth-size planets orbiting within the habitable zone of sun-like stars.

But the new planet, GJ 667Cc, orbits a red dwarf ? a type of star that is much smaller, fainter, and far more common in the galaxy than sun-like stars. Given red dwarfs' prevalence, the finding suggests that the galaxy should be brimming with super Earths in habitable zones, the research team says.

The new planet's host star, GJ 667C, has about 30 percent of the sun's mass and gives off most of its radiation as infrared light. It's part of a triple-star system that also contains a pair of orange-dwarf stars. These don't come closer to GJ 667C than about 230 astronomical units, or 230 times the distance between Earth and the sun. They would be distant specks in the sky to a spacecraft orbiting the new planet.

Because the star is substantially fainter than the sun, its habitable zone is closer. GJ 677Cc orbits its red dwarf at about 0.12 astronomical units, zipping around the star once every 27.15 days.

Astrobiologists suggest red dwarfs have an important thing going for them as energy sources for life on any planets orbiting them: longevity.

Red dwarfs are dim because they are not burning their hydrogen fuel as furiously as more-massive stars. And unlike more massive stars, they have access to all of their hydrogen fuel. So they last longer than sun-like stars.

The sun boasts a respectable 10-billion year life span. For a star like GJ 677C, a life span is measured in trillions of years ? plenty of time for life to emerge and evolve many times over if conditions permit. The team estimates that GJ 667C is only about 5 billion years old.

Yet others caution that the laws of physics may conspire against the presence of liquid water on planets in an orbit like GJ 667Cc's.

The planet may be close enough to the star that, if the planet's orbit is circular, the gravitational interaction between the two objects eventually will force the planet slow its rotation until it presents the same hemisphere to the star all the time, says University of Maine astronomer Neil Comins.

Astronomers call this synchronous rotation: The planet's rotation rate matches the time it takes the planet to orbits its star. One hemisphere of the planet is permanently roasting, the other is frozen.

Even with an atmosphere that circulates between the day side and night side, it's unclear if enough warmth will make it to the night side to keep water vapor transported there from freezing out as snow, rarely if ever to return to the day side. In effect, the night side could rob the day side of any water.

Lawsuit seeks info, damages in 7-year oil spill (AP)

NEW ORLEANS ? An environmental watchdog group filed a lawsuit Thursday against the company it blames for an oil spill 11 miles off the coast of Louisiana, claiming oil has been flowing into the Gulf of Mexico for more than seven years with few details about what's being done to stop it.

Waterkeeper Alliance claims hundreds of gallons of oil are leaking every day from the site where an offshore platform and 28 oil wells owned by Taylor Energy Co. were damaged by a seafloor mudslide triggered by Hurricane Ivan in 2004.

By comparison, the 2010 blowout of BP PLC's Macondo well spewed more than 200 million gallons total, for an average of about 2.35 million gallons a day, according to government figures.

The New York-based alliance said they filed the federal lawsuit in New Orleans because Taylor Energy and government regulators refuse to answer basic questions about their spill response.

"This spill is in relatively shallow water," said Justin Bloom, a regional director for the group. "If it takes more than seven years to contain a spill like this in a relatively accessible environment, what would happen in a dangerous and inaccessible deepwater environment?"

Taylor Energy didn't immediately respond to calls Thursday seeking comment. A spokeswoman for the Interior Department's Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement said the agency doesn't comment on pending litigation.

The suit accuses the New Orleans-based company of violating the Clean Water Act and Resource Conservation Recovery Act and seeks civil penalties of up to $37,500 per day.

Waterkeeper Alliance says satellite imagery and an analysis of oil slicks indicate oil is leaking from the site at a rate of 100 to 400 gallons per day.

The Coast Guard, however, says the average amount of oil leaking from the site is 7.5 gallons per day. Oil sheens from the site have been "minimal" and have never made landfall, according to the Coast Guard, which says a total of 12,720 gallons of oil have been reported from daily observations since the spill started in 2004 .

The Coast Guard also says three containment domes were deployed to capture the oil.

"The sheen size of a few gallons (in volume as observed over the sheen dimensional area) has been too thin of an oil film to warrant offshore recovery operations," a Coast Guard statement says.

The April 20, 2010, blowout of the Macondo well triggered the nation's worst offshore oil spill, with more than 200 million gallons of oil gushing into the Gulf. Oil from the BP spill washed up on beaches, befouled marshes and disrupted the region's seafood industry.

While the spill blamed on Taylor Energy is minuscule in comparison, Bloom said it's reasonable to assume the leak has had a "cumulative impact" harmful to the Gulf's environment.

The Interior Department directed Taylor Energy to deposit $500 million in a trust to cover spill-related expenses, according to a report issued by the Waterkeeper Alliance. The alliance says a rig that Taylor Energy hired to plug the damaged wells hasn't been seen at the site since June 2011 even though oil slicks continue to be spotted nearby.

"This suggests that fixing the leak is a low priority for the company and government regulators," the report says.

Other environmental groups are named as plaintiffs in the suit, including the Louisiana Environmental Action Network, Atchafalaya Basinkeeper, Galveston Baykeeper and Louisiana Bayoukeeper.

In October, Waterkeeper Alliance filed a notice of its intent to sue and sent demand letters to Taylor Energy and two other companies, Korea National Oil Corp. and Samsung C&T Corp. In 2008, Taylor Energy sold most of its energy assets for an undisclosed price to the other two companies, which formed a joint venture to operate them. Korea National and Samsung, however, have said Taylor Energy retained ownership of the production platform and wells that are the target of the lawsuit.

First Things First in the Basement

Barbara Green was getting impatient with her husband. "Remember our New Year's resolution to remodel the basement?"

Bernie Green nodded, and tried to look apologetic. "I do. And I've been meaning to call John's contractor friend who has does some basement remodeling jobs."

"Well, what's keeping you?" Barbara asked.

Bernie sighed and looked up from his laptop. "You know we get some wet spots in the back corner of the basement, where the slab floor is cracked. I've noticed that the crack is getting a little bigger, and I'm worried about more water coming in during the wet weather this spring."

Barbara was undeterred. "Yes, I know about the crack," she replied. "But that's at the opposite end of the basement from where our new room will be.

Why can't we just get the contractor to patch the crack before he begins to build the new room?"

Discussions like this are fairly common, and could easily occur wherever basements are found. Many homeowners are interested in turning unfinished basement space into extra living space because they know it's a very cost-effective way to gain extra living space.

Unfortunately, many basements have water problems. And even if the problem is minimal and located in a remote corner of the basement -like at the Green's house?it's important to solve the water problem before beginning a basement finishing project.

In the Green's basement, a slab crack that changes size indicates more than a water problem.

It's a sign of unstable soil. Simply patching the crack, as Barbara Green suggests, will not stop the soil movement or subsequent foundation damage.

Unstable soil is surprisingly common. It can be due to natural conditions such as high clay content that causes soil to expand when wet and exert extreme pressure on foundation walls and slabs. It can be due to soil that wasn't properly compacted and stabilized before footings and slaps were poured. It can also be due to a high water table that puts pressure on foundation walls. The average home remodeling contractor often has the skills to fill cracks or seal damp foundation walls. But he won't be able to recognize soil problems or structural foundation problems and make permanent repairs using specialized products like wall anchors, helical piers and polymer injection. This work must be done by a foundation repair specialist.

The lesson here is that it's important to do first things first in the basement. Stabilize the soil in the area where the crack is located so that a permanent repair can be made to the foundation. Complete waterproofing work to ensure that the basement will stay dry. Then proceed to finish the basement.

To complete this sequence of work, you need the expertise and resources that are only available from a full-service foundation specialist like Basement Systems. Basement Systems and its sister company, Foundation SupportWorks, offer the advantages of specialized training, engineering support to solve foundation problems, and a wide range of products designed for foundation repair, soil stabilization, waterproofing and basement finishing.

Church Cardinal Anthony Bevilacqua Competent To Stand Sex Abuse Trial

PHILADELPHIA -- A retired Roman Catholic cardinal with dementia is competent and his recent deposition testimony can be used at an upcoming priest abuse trial, a judge ruled Monday.

A church official charged with child endangerment and accused of keeping pedophiles in ministry argues that Cardinal Anthony Bevilacqua can no longer recognize him, even though he served the cardinal for more than a decade.

Monsignor William Lynn, 61, is the first U.S. church official ever charged in the priest abuse crisis over accusations of administrative failings.

Prosecutors argue that Lynn and the archdiocese fed predators a steady stream of young victims for decades rather than expose the church to scandal ? and costly lawsuits. Lynn served as secretary of clergy for the Archdiocese of Philadelphia from 1992 to 2004. He faces up to 28 years in prison if convicted on all counts.

His lawyers hint that he won't go down alone. They stress that Lynn took his marching orders from Bevilacqua, who was never charged despite two grand jury reports that blasted both the cardinal's leadership and his 10 grand jury appearances.

They say prosecutors are trying to make Lynn the scapegoat for the dozens of Philadelphia priests credibly accused of abusing children.

Prosecutors, though, say Lynn was among the select few who had access to sex abuse complaints kept in "secret archives" at the archdiocese.

No one was charged after the first grand jury report in 2005 because of legal time limits.

The second report last year recommended charging Lynn with child endangerment; prosecutors later added conspiracy charges as well. In court last week, they called the archdiocese "an unindicted co-conspirator."

Lynn is set to go on trial in March with two co-defendants, a priest and a defrocked priest who are each charged with sexually assaulting a single boy, based on complaints filed under newly expanded time limits in Pennsylvania. Lynn's defense lawyers want to limit the trial to his handling of those two men alone.

Prosecutors hope to tell jurors how Lynn and other church officials handled the careers of 27 other priests "credibly accused," to show a pattern of behavior.

The judge heard details of those allegations, which range from "grooming" to fondling to rape, for several days last week. She pledged to rule by Monday.

"It's very, very difficult, and maybe impossible, for us to defend 27 or 28 cases, which involve disparate elements and occurred 20, 30, 40 years ago," Thomas Bergstrom, a lawyer for Lynn, argued Monday.

Assistant District Attorney Patrick Blessington debated the point.

"This case is not impossible, it's (just) unprecedented," he said.

Defense lawyers may call Bevilacqua to court if prosecutors seek to use his recent testimony. Bevilacqua was deposed in late November, to preserve his sworn statements in case he is unavailable during the monthslong trial. The retired cardinal suffers from both dementia and an undisclosed form of cancer, church lawyers have said.

Lynn's co-defendants are former priest Edward Avery, 69, and the Rev. James Brennan, 48.

Brennan's lawyer also wants to keep out the uncharged priest abuse allegations, lest his client get "swept up" by the tide.

"If that comes in, the danger we confront is whether my client, a Catholic priest, is going to be swept up in a perception that the Catholic Church, that the archdiocese, has a big problem, and he's one of them, so he must be guilty," said lawyer William Brennan, who isn't related to his client.

Jury selection is scheduled for Feb. 21. The trial is scheduled to start on March 26.
