Just over one month after crossing the 40,000 app-submission threshold, Microsoft's Windows Phone Marketplace has hit another milestone: 50,000. According to analyses done by All About Windows Phone, the Taj Mahal of tiles has seen developers submit just over 50,000 applications for review -- 42,655 of which are currently available in the United States. What may be more telling is the rate at which developers are submitting their wares. Over 17,000 apps have been submitted to the Marketplace in the last 90-days from over 13,000 different publishers (an average of 265 per day). With Apple's iOS App Store and Google's Android Market sitting firmly atop the mobile-app-ecosystem totem pole, Microsoft is looking to close the gap and put distance between itself and Research In Motion's BlackBerry App World. Hopefully, the gang from Redmond can keep the positive momentum going through 2012... even with its next major mobile OS revision being a minor one.
(Reuters) ? Macy's Inc (M.N) and Wal-Mart Stores Inc (WMT.N) continue to get high marks from Wall Street as the busy season draws to a close, while Sears Holdings Corp (SHLD.O) proved that it was really not a jolly holiday for all stores.
Sears said it would close dozens of Sears and Kmart stores after sales at its existing locations dropped 5.2 percent from the beginning of the quarter through Christmas. Its shares plunged 26 percent on Tuesday.
The announcement comes two weeks after Best Buy Co Inc (BBY.N) said that the bigger discounts it offered to kick-start the holiday season ate into profits.
Success stories, particularly at Macy's and Wal-Mart, show that they and other retailers are benefiting from recent overhauls and the right mix of holiday season discounts.
"To sum up the whole season, I would say extremely focused on bargains, that's where the consumer's mindset is, and the retailers generally, overall, delivered pretty compelling bargains, they gave the consumer a reason to shop," said B. Riley & Co senior analyst Jeff Van Sinderen.
While it is too early to tell, analysts said that the season's promotional prices largely seemed to be in line with what retailers set out to do to entice shoppers.
Macy's surpassed rivals such as J.C. Penney Co Inc (JCP.N) by opening at midnight on Black Friday and from earlier decisions such as letting regional managers pick merchandise that caters to their clientele. After Macy's November sales rose more than expected, it said that if such momentum held up, its profit could also be stronger than forecast.
"I see Macy's as the market-share winner," said independent retail analyst Brian Sozzi, who said shoppers did not see "slash-and-burn discounting" at the department store chain.
"They are the destination place among department stores," he said.
For Walmart, this season was a chance to prove that returning to its historic strategy of low prices on a wide variety of goods would bring shoppers back to the world's largest chain after two tough years.
Realizing that times are tough for its shoppers, many of whom do not have credit cards or bank accounts, Walmart brought back layaway in mid-October. That move hurt competitors.
Layaway sales, where items are put aside for customers until they fully pay for them, fell at Kmart, while Target Corp (TGT.N) saw sales of toys crimped by Wal-Mart's layaway push even before Thanksgiving.
Retailers are expected to ring up $469.1 billion in holiday season sales, or a rise of 3.8 percent from 2010, according to the National Retail Federation.
Meanwhile, U.S. consumer confidence rose to an eight-month high in December, the Conference Board said, suggesting that Americans have a brighter take on the economy heading into 2012.
The S&P retail index (.RLX) was up modestly on Tuesday, roughly in line with the broader S&P 500 index (.SPX).
TEEN ANGST
In general, analysts said that retailers did a good job of having the right level of inventory in place, which meant there was not a need for major panicked discounting.
But it appeared that few retailers foresaw just how mild the weather would be so far in most parts of the country, leading to a glut of warm coats, sweaters and other such items.
That could put pressure on companies such as winter outerwear makers VF Corp (VFC.N), which makes The North Face line, and Columbia Sportswear Co (COLM.O), said Craig Johnson, president of Customer Growth Partners.
"While the economic tone seems a bit better, the lower-end consumer is still most constrained and thus we think investors are still best positioned in those companies targeting higher-end consumers," such as Tiffany & Co (TIF.N), True Religion Apparel Inc (TRLG.O) and Nordstrom Inc (JWN.N), said Caris & Company analyst Dorothy Lakner.
Lakner's favorite small and mid-cap stocks are Zumiez Inc (ZUMZ.O) and American Eagle Outfitters Inc (AEO.N), "where specific strategies set them apart," she said.
Among chains catering to teens, American Eagle appeared to have "better traffic consistently" throughout the season, while Abercrombie & Fitch Co (ANF.N) kept its prices too high, even with discounts, said Sozzi.
American Eagle's success "has come at the expense of the higher priced Abercrombie, which got hammered," said Johnson.
Another teen-focused retailer, Aeropostale Inc (ARO.N), struggled without fresh fashion and lost out to competitors such as Forever 21, H&M (HMb.ST) and Fast Retailing's (9983.T) Uniqlo, he said.
Lakner also called out Children's Place Retail Stores Inc (PLCE.O) as one of retail's "best turnaround stories."

With his intricate formations of otherwise mundane objects, Abel hopes to expose the "hidden geometric beauty" in our everyday lives. It may seem as if Abel's creations would be easy to replicate while blankly staring at your computer screen at work, but rest assured, Abel's sculptures are no easy task.

Abel created a dodecahedron, a three dimensional shape with 12 flat sides out of mere paperclips. One of his more intriguing pieces, "Stressful," is a formation of binder clips that are woven together to remain open. Abel also posts mathematical writings and talks on his website. 3DS sells 4 million and Mario games sell 1 million each in Japan
Famitsu is reporting that 510,629 3DS systems were sold last week in Japan, breaking the previous sales record of 367,691, set just the week before. This brings the total lifetime sales of the 3DS in Japan to 4,135,739 systems.
Of course, 3DS software is selling, too. Super Mario 3D Land has moved 1,042,511 in Japan to date, and Mario Kart 7 has sold 1,082,391 units. These are the first two 3DS games to break a million in the country. Capcom's Monster Hunter Tri-G recently shipped one million copies, so expect it to become the third 3DS million seller soon.
The 3DS and its games have certainly had a strong holiday season, both in Japan and elsewhere, despite a slow start earlier this year. It turns out Mario sells systems. Who knew?

Remote controls suck, but touchscreen phones and tablets aren't smart enough to replace them, yet. Logitech's Harmony Link is there to bridge the gap between your WiFi device and TV, but we found it inflexible, unreliable and unspectacular. Some of those issues might have been fixed in the recent update -- but what would you do differently to make it the must have gadget of 2012? Ladies and gentlemen, when you've finished your turkey dinners (happy holidays!), sound off in the comments.

Users of LogMeIn's Ignition are in for a pleasant surprise this holiday season. The once paid — and quite expensive — app is now migrating to a freemium model. That said, users who paid for Ignition won't have to cough up the dough for a LogMeIn Pro subscription, but they will get the added premium features including HD remote control (and HD streaming) from their computers to their iOS devices.
Mike London guided Virginia to an 8-4 season in 2011 and a berth in the Chick-fil-A Bowl Dec. 31 vs. Auburn?showing that the Cavaliers made a wise investment in hiring London in 2010 to turn around the struggling program.
Now it?s London who is making the investment into Virginia?s future.
London is pledging $225,000 to support the school?s efforts in building a new indoor practice facility for the team. The project?s cost is $13 million, and including London?s cash, the Cavaliers have raised $9.5 million for the project.
"The construction of the indoor practice facility is an important part of the effort to make our football program consistently successful," London said in a release. "That's why I want to show my personal support for the fundraising effort by making this pledge.
"The indoor facility will be a tremendous benefit for our team's in-season preparation and out-of-season conditioning."
Virginia hopes to have all of the money raised by the end of February and the project completed in time for 2013 spring practice.
Actor Christian Bale, in China to promote 'The Flowers of War,' tussled with thugs as he tried to visit Chinese dissident Chen Guangcheng. Was the encounter a bit self-promotional or helpful?
Far be it from me to suggest that Christian Bale, the Oscar winning Hollywood star who made his name as Batman, is anything but a noble warrior for international human rights.
But it is hard not to detect a smidgeon of self-promotion in his latest stunt ? getting himself filmed by CNN being roughed up by Chinese thugs during a vain attempt to visit Chen Guangcheng, a famous human rights activist who has been under house arrest for the past 15 months.
Mr. Bale is in China to promote his latest movie ?The Flowers of War,? about the brutal Japanese occupation of Nanking in 1937, which some critics have panned as Chinese propaganda. His successful televised bid to draw world attention to the illegal detention of one of the sharpest thorns in the Chinese government?s side has certainly undercut such criticism.
CNN said Bale contacted the network?s Beijing office asking for help in visiting Mr. Chen, whose village in eastern China has been locked down by plainclothes security men for more than a year. Diplomats, journalists, and ordinary Chinese citizens have been violently turned away whenever they have sought to visit the blind lawyer who helped alleged victims of forced abortions.
'Couldn't look the other way'
In CNN?s report on the visit, Bale says he could not ?look the other way? knowing that Chen was being kept incommunicado, and that he just wanted to shake the activist?s hand.
Bale has also rejected accusations that by starring in ?The Flowers of War,? the most expensive film ever made in China and directed by Zhang Yimou who choreographed the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics, he had contributed to a nationalist Chinese demonization of the Japanese.
?That would be a bit of a kneejerk reaction,? he told reporters at the premiere in Beijing earlier this week.
I found the film, which opened here on Friday and which is expected to be a smash hit, to be melodramatic, sentimental, and implausible. But the two dimensional depiction of Japanese soldiers as heartless and cunning beasts is not very different from the way US and British films used to portray World War II Germans.
US and British film makers have gotten over that, in a way that Chinese film makers have still not. That?s because the Chinese government still finds it politically useful to focus popular nationalist resentment on the Japanese. Perhaps Christian Bale?s publicity coup, by drawing more attention to Chen Guangcheng?s fate, will nudge the Chinese government toward getting over its habit of locking up uncomfortable critics.
A lot of people associate a ?green? automobile with a hybrid or an electric car. While there?s nothing wrong with that, Ford puts a lot of effort into green or sustainable initiatives that aren?t so obvious in many of its vehicles.
To share some of these innovative ideas and to learn more from influencers, Ford worked with EcoStiletto to create the ?EcoStiletto to the Metal: Sustainable Design Media Salon,? at the historic Farmer?s Daughter Hotel in Los Angeles.
We talked to Natasha Garber, editor of EcoStiletto, to hear what she thought of the program:
Ford Social: Why did you and EcoStiletto decide to work with Ford on this program?
Natasha Garber: When EcoStiletto began in 2007, the idea was to create an online space where women could learn more about sustainability in terms of style. When Ford came to us with the idea of creating an event where we could discuss the integration of sustainability into their design, especially as it relates to using ?cradle to cradle? materials, we were thrilled.
FS: Your website covers all types of fashion ? how does automotive design fit in with the great variety of things you talk about?
NG: Yes, we?re talking about cars, not a subject typically associated with fashion. At EcoStiletto, our focus is on style and sustainability. We learned that Ford shares the same focus.
FS: Do you see a lot of crossover between great fashion and automotive design?
NG: After this event, yes!
FS: What can the automotive industry learn from the fashion industry? And vice versa?
NG: Most importantly, I think both can learn that there is a place for sustainability in both industries. If Ford can create a car from 100 percent sustainable materials, then why can?t a high-fashion design house ? or a popular, mid-range retailer or designer for that matter ? do an entire line in the same way?
FS: What did you hope to get from this program? How does that compare with what happened?
NG: The event actually exceeded my hopes. I knew that our Ford panelists would be full of valuable information, but I was amazed at how passionate and uncompromising they were about their work. Anthony Prozzi?s presentation on cultural influences, and the new demand for better, more efficient, greener cars was really inspiring. And I appreciated that Carol Kordich and Susan Swek excited everyone with their discussion of color, materials and the influence of fashion on Ford interior design, but they were also forthcoming about the real challenges of approaching difficult areas like carpeting and exterior paint from a sustainable perspective. And I loved how engaged our media audience was, I?m pretty sure they could have continued asking questions for hours.
FS: Any big surprises during the event?
NG: I think the biggest surprise was learning about Ford sustainable initiatives across the board, not just in the area of what we think of as ?eco? cars ? namely hybrid and electric vehicles ? but across its entire fleet. It was great to learn just how much of an environmental impact even a 25 percent sustainable materials mandate can have in terms of resource conservation and waste reduction. I also loved hearing about the Ford C-max Energi plug-in hybrid, which I think is going to be one car that our readers will definitely covet.

WASHINGTON -- As much of the country fixates on Iowa for the next two weeks, former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman is preparing to make his stand in New Hampshire, where he's quietly gaining in the polls. Just last week, Huntsman replaced Ron Paul in the third place spot among GOP presidential primary candidates in the state -- a first for the moderate Republican, who has struggled to gain traction in a field of seemingly more conservative candidates.
Two-hundred fifty miles south of Manchester, N.H., in Manhattan, an unlikely and influential Huntsman supporter is excited for the candidate's prospects in the primary. Lynn Forester de Rothschild, a former Telecom executive and the wife of financier Sir Evelyn de Rothschild, was an outspoken Hillary Clinton supporter in 2008, and she backed John McCain after Obama won the nomination, angering many in the Democratic party.
Now de Rothschild has backed another Republican, Jon Huntsman, although she's still a registered Democrat. She has also joined the board of a new hybrid political/nonprofit group, Americans Elect, which appears poised to place a third party candidate on the ballot in as many as 20 states next year.
SUPPORT FOR HUNTSMAN
Earlier this year, de Rothschild co-hosted a major New York fundraiser for Huntsman, whom she had urged to run for president while he was still serving as Obama's ambassador to China. A few weeks ago, de Rothschild and designer Diane von Furstenburg co-hosted a lunch for Huntsman's wife, Mary Kaye Huntsman.
"The impetus for the lunch was a private and personal lunch, because Mary Kaye is a wonderful woman, and that's why we made it clear it wasn't a fundraiser or a lunch about political support," de Rothschild told The Huffington Post, "but I will continue to host fundraising events for Jon [Huntsman], and I really do believe he should be the nominee."
But while Huntsman polls at less than 3 percent nationally, it's a tough road ahead for de Rothschild and team Huntsman. "It's not that Huntsman is blameless" for his low poll numbers, de Rothschild said, "but it's sad because he's such a decent, pragmatic, thoughtful person."
Lynn de Rothschild first caught wind of Jon Hunstman in 2009, when the Obama administration's then-ambassador to China gave a commencement address at the University of Pennsylvania, where both of their children were studying. "I remember thinking he was so bold," she said, a word that few political observers employ to describe the soft-spoken governor. de Rothschild admitted as much, but said that "while he doesn't have a reputation for boldness when he talks on stage during debates, I believe his tax plan is a bold, pro-growth plan."
"I didn't know he was thinking of running for president, so when he announced he was going to retire from his diplomatic post I sent him a note and said, 'Dear Jon maybe this is a great opportunity for you to consider a run for president.' But I did not hear back, so I thought, 'he probably thinks it's foolish,'" she said.
"But after he got back from China I received a note that said, 'Dear Lynn, forgive me for taking so long to get back to you, but this is last thing I'm going to do before leaving China. I've had your note on my desk, and it has made me smile,'" de Rothschild added. "Jon's so nice, but it does not seem to be helping him in this toxic political environment."
In addition to his tax plan, Huntsman "boldly supported the Ryan [Medicare reform] plan, he is in favor of civil unions, and he believes that [the] Dodd-Frank [Wall Street reform bill] didn't go far enough," she said. "Those are the positions of a very courageous and bold politician."
In a Republican field campaigning for votes among the party's largely conservative primary-goers, "bold" may well be an accurate description of Huntsman's more moderate positions, which will likely do little to help him in states such as Iowa and South Carolina.
As for what's working against Hunstman, de Rothschild points to the GOP base. "The Republican base has gotten much too irrational," she said, and if the party loses the general election, then "the base has to blame the base. They're getting what they want [right now] -- a candidate who is unelectable in the general election -- and they're getting an opportunity to lose the White House. This is snatching defeat from the jaws of victory."
The Huntsman campaign declined to comment.
Like Huntsman, de Rothschild isn't afraid to ruffle a few feathers in her own party. "I took a lot more grief [from fellow Democrats] in 2008 than I have this year," she said, referring to her endorsement of McCain over Obama. "More Democrats I know this year would consider an alternative to Obama, whereas in 2008, largely because of Hillary Clinton support for Obama [after she lost the primary], people didn't want to consider someone else."
Despite having supported McCain, de Rothschild acknowledges that, for independent voters, there were problems with the 2008 GOP ticket. "Truthfully, and understandably, Sarah Palin was a big barrier for a lot of voters who might have considered voting for McCain," she said.
And while she stressed that she was backing Huntsman 100 percent, de Rothschild also acknowledged that the road to the nomination is difficult for the former Utah governor. "I would ultimately back Romney over Obama," she said, if she were forced to choose, "because I think Obama has shown a lack of leadership that will not just disappear overnight."
AMERICANS ELECT
De Rothschild's vocal support for Huntsman isn't the only way she has jumped into the 2012 presidential race -- she's also on the leadership board of a group called Americans Elect (AE), a moderate, bipartisan nonprofit that aims "to nominate a presidential ticket that answers directly to voters--not the political system."
The group seeks to do this by first guaranteeing ballot access for its candidate in as many states as possible, and only then allowing voters to choose a candidate through an online process.
"The goal is to create a nominating process where any legitimate voter can go online and answer the question, 'Who would you like to see as president and vice president?' so people don't have to take the disappointing options being offered by the frontrunners of the GOP and Obama right now," de Rothschild said.
"For me, I support Americans Elect because I believe our democracy needs to give individuals more power, not the parties," she said.
Questions remain about exactly how the nominating process will work for AE, but "we keep it open by having a completely open platform," said de Rothschild, acknowledging that "there are rules you need to follow in order to qualify. You need to have excelled [in order to be on the ballot], and mechanisms are built in to prevent unqualified candidates from entering the AE election."
Asked who her wish-list candidates might be, de Rothschild named CIA Director David Petraeus, former Washington D.C. Schools Chancellor Michelle Rhee, and David Walker, a former comptroller general of the United States under Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush.
"The polls show we as a nation are fiscally conservative and socially tolerant," de Rothschild said, "and neither party is offering a candidate on that platform."
She stressed that she hopes Huntsman will win the Republican nomination, and that if he doesn't, she'll back Mitt Romney. But it is impossible not to at least wonder whether de Rothschild's two current political causes -- Huntsman and AE -- might ever collide, with Huntsman as a third party centrist candidate, perhaps even on an AE ticket. Not surprisingly, neither de Rothschild nor the Huntsman camp would discuss that possibility, but Tara Malloy, associate counsel at the Washington-based Campaign Legal Center, told HuffPost that at the very least, it's probably not illegal.
"Right now, [Huntsman's] access to the AE ballot would rely on the group's internal mechanisms," she said, "as well as the individual state laws that govern ballot access."
In all likelihood, Huntsman would also be able to apply the money he has raised so far to a third-party run, if that were in the cards for him. According to Malloy, one of the only things forbidden by the Federal Election Commission would be if Huntsman attempted to "convert campaign funds for personal use, and that does not appear to be the situation here," she said.
